OK, figured it out.
If you insert the 'Share' url from youtube it doesn't work (format
http://youtu.be/.....)
If you open the video in IE and post that URL minus this tagline at the end (&feature=youtu.be) it does work.
ie the url needs to be in the format
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=... not the format
http://youtu.be/.....
