Gearbox Bearing Upgrade / LSD Clarifications

Post by shiggz »

Hey guys,

I'm a little confused on 2 things.

1. I'm looking to put a wavetrac LSD into my manual gearbox. I recently got my gearbox rebuilt, using the CobraTransmissions full rebuild kit. What extra bearings are required to put the LSD in the box?
According to the link below, I need:
MD717879 - Speedo Ring Gear
MD710663 - Roller Bearings (x2 required)

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/archi ... 90593.html

Is that correct?

2. I will soon be putting a 6a13tt into my FTO, and hence want to upgrade the input shaft bearing. Following up from Bennoz's thread
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=15644&hilit=thrott ... start=1360

Is there any bearing that you can buy that is an upgrade to our stock input shaft bearing? - Do the evo bearings fit, or can we get the stock bearing tapered?

The Wavetrac uses the same standard diff bearings that come with the Cobra kit. No need to get any extras, unless you're wanting to replace.

Koyo Hi Cap Tapered Roller Bearings
2 x Koyo 57428-N (LM501349-N)

The speedo gear you will need.

No EVO bearings don't fit and no there is no other option.

EVO bearings also suffer from the same issue.

So would that standard diff bearing already be in the gearbox, if I got my rebuild done?

Because I got my rebuild done, and the guy used all the parts from the kit, and gave me all the old parts which I disposed of. So that diff bearing would already be in my gearbox, or is that just an extra part that comes in the kit?

Also yeah I had a look at the Koyo bearing, is it much different to the Mitsubishi one; better quality? Because the Koyo ones are double the price

Um, it's just a bearing. Think my local bearing shop wanted 15 bucks each?

For the Koyo ones?
Amayama have the Mitsubishi ones for $20, and 123bearings have them for $40USD
I'll see if I can source one locally

Do I still need that Speedo Ring Gear though? Or would that already be in my gearbox

From what I understand Mitsubishi OEM bearings are Koyo bearings anyway.

How much was the rebuild kit?
And how much labour did you pay out of curiosity?

Yes you need the speedo ring gear. Factory full slip speedo gears are machined onto the diff & cant be removed.

And yes, Spetz is right, factory bearings are Koyo.

Ah okay! Thanks for clearing that up.

When I got the gearbox rebuilt, I bought the full CobraTransmissions kit incl synchros. So the kit costed roughly $442USD shipped; approximately $550-600AUD. And the full manual labour of the rebuild cost $850 (Cost of supplying the gearbox and rebuild kit).

Vectose tells me you can now source them from Amayama cheaper than from Cobra

Yeah my new local bearing guy is cheaper than Cobra. With the exception of the secondary output bearing, it's a Mitsubishi specific one.

There's 2 different kits, one with just bearings, one with bearings and syncros. Big price jump for the one with syncros.

Just ordered my Wavetrac LSD from Raventech Racing in Perth, being imported from Wavetrac/Autotech.
Got it for $1500 incl shipping and import taxes which isn't too bad considering all the other places sell it for a fair amount more.
