Turbo related issue, need some advice

Post by adzski »

Hi Guys,

I will just say now, this is not in relation to a FTO, just wanting to advice from more mechanically experienced members than myself.
So recently i purchased a Ford BA XR6 Turbo, this is my first turbo car and i am still learing as i am going along.
As of late it has developed an annoying problem. so when the car is under boost the engine will sometimes backfire and struggle under load.
It usually first happens in second gear at about 3000 RPM - 4000PM feels like the power just stops, however if i lift off the throttle and accelerate again it will boost for abit then happens again.

So i did bit of reading and sounds like maybe a boost cut or a fuel cut.
So i have replaced all the coil packs, spark plugs and i changed the fuel filter, however it is still doing the same thing.

Could it be a damaged wastegate or maybe my fuel pump? or a boost leak?
The guy i bought it off said he just put a walbro pump in. but not sure how truthful he was in saying that.

what do you guys think?

Thanks for any replies.

Backfiring will generally be caused by running rich. Having said that it may not actually be running rich, could just be not igniting fuel going in which will make it seem like rich. I reckon something in your spark system will be unhappy under load. Have you checked ignition leads? I would start there.

Then move onto fuel system diagnosis if it doesn't fix it, although sounds like spark. Do you have any way of checking the error codes?

On BA Falcon its just direct wiring to the coil with a plug. there are no leads as such, more or less a harness.
When i removed the old plugs i looked online. from what i could see online it looked like it was running lean, from the state of the plug. i can upload if pic if needed.

No i dont have a way of reading codes. i have been meaning to buy a reader though.
I will look online if there is a way like with the FTO where you can read the codes with out the reader.

With Spark as i have put brand new coils in and Plugs. what else can i check? Could it be the gap on the plug?

Hey guys

I bought a OBDII reader.
Checked codes on the BA xr6t. There are no codes.
Do you think it could be a issue with the wastegate?

Na highly doubt wastgate issue mate.

By sounds of it spark is issue here. did you get correct gap plugs? or check coils.
Might be worth trying another Map sensor too

But hard to know without being there to diagnose
