EVO 8 conversion

Post by Kashikhan55 »

HI, okay another noooob question but i have a bit of money to play around with so doing bit of research of heavily modifying my gpx to munch on evos and other car in evo leagues with my gpx.

but however i want do do an evo 8 conversion and conversion into awd as well from current fwd and being lighter naturally the fto will have better aerodynamics than an evo 8 itself giving it an advantage.

is it possible with evo 8 conversion in FTO shell to beat evo 8s and other sports cars in evo leagues?

so why an evo 8? because generally speaking evos are benchmark in sports cars and having to meet that bench mark is the first step.
and some i know will say why not spend the money and get evo itself.
reason being is simply put there are way too many evos on road and its nothing special or unique where as FTOs are really rare and the shape of it is just appealing and i get compliments as it is but heavily modifying i want to be able to brag about its performance as well rather than looks alone.

what are your thoughts on this?

Question everyone always asks even though I can't help you otherwise.

"How deep are your pockets?"

But take Bennoz for example, still rockin' FWD and he can smoke speccy cars. You need to stomach to cost of things breaking and the annual gearbox rebuild though. He's converted to the Galant 6A13 twin turbo, btw.

according to costs i calculated and according to research and talking to mechanic i was quoted 10k clean job
and even if the cost rises from 10 to max 12 i'll be considering it

one mechanic did mention it but i dont think anything will be skipped during conversion that matters cause the quote was for full clean conversion job

Try 2 years and $20k to get it up and running properly.

2 years is a pretty long time you know. Reckon you could do it in much less. Perfecting it would obviously take a bit longer. Depends how many problems you encounter.

Taking bets now, case of beer says it will be over 20 grand total if its to be done properly and engineered.

Cost of the engine, gearbox, drive lines, you will need things like bigger brakes to actually get it engineered (if you even can), then we get onto labor costs, then theres the 1,000 odd dollars to get the engineers certificate...

$20k is my guess.

Although I do want to see it up and running, it would be a beast. Best of luck with it all, just be prepared for costs to go up.. and up..

and up.

Will happily eat my words if you can get away with this within budget and not dodg-ily.

i doubt it'l be 20 grand cause both mechanics gave similar quotes you'd think one would be ok off his head but another one telling similar thing? its likely that the cost would be below 15k but over 8k

as for problems im sure initially there will be problems but nothing that cant be fixed or engineered

Your choice of Evo makes no sense, it's a hypothetical ideal. These sorts of conversons get very expensive when you aim for ideals. Do yourself a favour, grab an Evo II/III for the AWD conversion. The chassis types are very similar, floor pans & tunnel will cut & weld in without too much headache.

Then apply the general rule of thumb - triple your initial budget estimates - and you'll get what you want.

I started with a 7 grand budget. Turned into 25 grand... and I'm only FWD.

Like I said, happy to be proved wrong and I hope that you can get it close to budget. 10k just seems like an under-quote.

Which is also a previously-done conversion (6A13tt which is fairly known to us FTO folk - whereas Evo 8 is completely new territory)

Also, Ben, was a huge chunk of your labor done yourself? Didn't you also source most of your own parts or?

Shops will put a mark-up on any parts they supply usually.

A mechanic will charge you about 4 grand just for a weeks labour. Working full time on your car.
