Differential preloading

Post by ftonoob »

Can someone confirm if I have this sequence correct for diff bearing preload?

After replacing bearings on diff place plastigage or solder in box casing

Install spacer and inner race

Install diff and clutch housing with outer race

Install case bolts (original) and torque to spec

Separate case again and remove diff

Remove inner race and spacer

Check width of plastigage or thickness of solder

If out of spec replace spacer

Reassemble box

Yeah, so you essential put it all together with solder as the shim, then pull it apart. Vernier the solder width, then install shims of the same thickness.

So the shim that came in the box is not placed for the check just the solder?
