Boston Acoustics setup. Any good? $1500 Budget

Post by mr_andersen »

Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my sound system. I already have a Pioneer AVH-P4250DVD headunit, but all the speakers are stock (AFAIK) and I don't have a sub or amp.

I don't know much about car audio, but I've heard that Boston Acoustics are very good.

This is what I've come up with so far.

Front: BA SPZ60 6.5" 2-Way Component Speakers ($651)

Sub: BA G312-44 12" Subwoofer + Atrend 12SQL Box ($301)

Amp: BA GT-4100 900W 4 Channel Car Amplifier ($342)

Total = $1294 AUD including delivery excluding installation.

I've heard that rear speakers aren't really needed and that it's better to spend the money on the front ones instead.

I listen to mostly rock/metal music as opposed to doof doof "music". Also I'm after sound quality more than sound level.

Also is there any major downside to getting this stuff from the US. I noticed that Aus online stores are 2-3x the price which is ridiculous. Why would anyone buy the higher end stuff in Aus (warranty purposes?)

Budget = ~$1500 including installation.

Opinions?

Thanks!

I personally wouldn't skimp on the 6x9s... And would definitely factor them into your budget (which looks like you are happy to spend the dough) which is awesome.
Looks like it's going to sound awesome:)

Boston Acoustics are Great...

I bought the Boston Pro Acoustics range some years ago. back then, the front splits were nothing short of $1k .. I bought them a few years back retail for about $900 .. And they are the best speakers I have ever had...

I now have 2 sets of them ... And was looking at retailing the Boston Products through my website... However, I can buy their product cheaper out of the states, then what they wanted to offer... So I dropped that idea...

I am not sure why the SPZ range is more then the Pro range... Mine were the PRO60SE, and are rated at 500W... However, you can pick them up for about $400 nowadays...
I just had to add it ......

I ended up getting an Image Dynamics IDQ-12 D4 V2 sub for $200. Apparently it's a great SQ sub. Still trying to choose comps and an amp.

Do you have sound insulation in the doors? I heard it'd be better to spend less on the speakers and more on insulation, tune etc. otherwise expensive speakers sound like shite.

No sound deadening ... Car sounded awesome...

Would have people on the opposite side of the road, and a fair few meters up, turn around when I was coming ... sound quality was awesome...

Ok i'll tell you what i just purchased. It is under your budget.

Door speakers - Boston Acoustics ProSeries 60SE - Car speaker - 125 Watt - 2-way - component ($338)

Rear 6x9's - Boston Acoustics SR95 - Car speaker - 75 Watt - 2-way - coaxial - 6" x 9" ($135)

4 channel amp to rune them good - Alpine PDX F6 - Amplifier - 4-channel
($445)

(i have a sub and mono amp already and a kenwood double din dvd head unit)

I like to listen to dubstep, my sub takes up half my boot. I will probably downgrade to dual 12" subs though. I'll see. I'm also thinking about getting dynomat for the boot and doors.

Got it all installed today!

Ended up getting Focal 165KR speakers and an Alpine PDX-5 amp. The amp's birth sheet put its actual power output 25% higher than its specified power. 104x4 + 400x1 RMS Watts at 4 Ohms is pretty good for such a small amp.

Took them 2.5 times longer than they said it would (to be expected) and they broke the floor console (again this didn't surprise me).

The Focal's cost me more than any Boston Acoustic speakers would have. They sound awesome though. Check out their Utopia range, a pair of those go for more than most FTO's do.

I'll check when I get home. I think it was around $500-600 from memory. They did a good job though. They carpeted a big piece of MDF and screwed it to the back of the rear seats in the boot and then mounted the amp to that. They were going to put the amp under the passenger seat and I was like, "yeah good luck with that".

Yeah they payed for the floor console. I told them where they could get one (dstocks). I haven't got them to install it yet though. I'm waiting for my new gearbox gaiter thing to come from the UK and for me to clock enough hours on the speakers so I can get my free tune.

i would have installed your speakers for half the price!
I did my car myself and the sounds is freakin mint.
My rear speakers blew though because they were the wrong type for my style of music. I suggest getting the car tuned after it's all setup so nothing goes wrong.
I tried messing with the settings myself and blew my rear right 6x9 brand new boston acoustic speaker. :(
So bought focal i think and replaced them.
The ba 6x9 still work but just one cuts out at really loud volume!
So if anyone wants to buy them for say 100 bucks? :) They cost me 200 from america.

Jeez only a 400w 4 channel
i dont have top range speakers, just have some decent pioneers as i blew most of my budget on the amp and sub as sometimes i crank the pundulum/prodigy up when ive been cranking metallica too much
1000w 8 channel amp and a 12" slim Kicker sub (best subs!)
Tweeters already came with the car and sounds mint, just cant justify spending that much on speakers alone as i would not notice the difference myself, im happy with my current setup :D
Maybe next bonfire someone can make me see the error of my ways..

I probably have the biggest amp lol 6000W Monoblock US Audio Bonecrusher 2 it weighs a f**k load and barely fits in the boot. It's totally stupid to have one that big but meh

It's 400W RMS not peak. And it's a 5 channel amp so it's 100x4 + 400x1 = 800W RMS total.

The sub only needs 350W RMS and the speakers 80W RMS each so it's sufficient.

The Boston Acoustics GT-5750 I was looking at was less powerful and two and a half times bigger.
