Error Codes Diagnosis - Engine - ABS - TCL - Auto Trans

Post by Bennoz »

Error Codes.

This info has been collated from FTO WA (thanks to Rich H) and the FTOOC (Thanks Storm)

The procedure to start the code checking process is:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The FTO's engine ECU monitors everything from sensors to injectors, solenoid valves to ignition. If it notices a problem, it records this in the form of a diagnostic code. A Mitsubishi dealer equipped with the right MUT-II diagnostic setup is apparently capable of accessing these codes.

But what if no such service is available to you? The FTO Workshop manuals do not provide any alternative method for extracting diagnostic codes.

Fortunately, the EVO Workshop manuals show a much easier way! Although the codes differ from the FTO, the method of extraction is identical... and the whole process requires nothing more than a single electrical lead...

Disclaimer: Do not attempt any wiring modifications yourself without (a) checking the connections, wire colours, etc. on your own vehicle, and (b) knowing what you are doing. I take no responsibility for any cooked wiring, ECUs or anything else you may feel like playing with. Any work done on your own vehicle is done so at your own risk...

The first step is to remove the panel underneath the steering wheel. This simply requires the removal of four screws. Note that the bonnet release cable and lever will still be connected to this panel - just drop the panel down and keep it out of the way.

Now if you crawl under there, you will notice an interface socket on the left hand side, about level with the bottom left screw you removed a moment ago.

Image

This is the location of the diagnosis connector, and I believe this is where a MUT-II unit is connected.

As I noted before, though, we don't need a MUT-II to do our dirty work! The EVO manual states...

Earth No. 1 terminal (diagnostic control terminal) of the diagnostic connector. Turn on the ignition switch.

Image

The image above was taken with the camera facing directly up. The "top" of the picture is oriented to the rear of the vehicle. Incidentally, the strange circular thing in the centre of the frame is simply the alarm's glass breakage sensor.

As noted before, we must earth No. 1 terminal on this connector. The pin in question is the bottom right one in the picture - highlighted.

All we have to do is ground out this pin by using a single cable. With the engine ignition switch on, the computer will flash the engine warning light to indicate any stored diagnostic code(s).

Because it was a bit of a pain getting in there and grounding this pin, I decided to find a less fiddly way of triggering an error code output...

At the back of the diagnostic plug, it was clear to see that the relevant pin was connected to an easily accessible lead (grey with red stripe on my 1995 GPX, but apparently a different colour on some other FTOs).

I used a standard patch connector to attach an extra wire to the relevant lead (see image below, highlighted).

Image

Now it is simply a matter of grounding out the permanent diagnostic lead stowed under the dash.

So what does an ECU diagnostic code look like when it is displayed?

Well, it looks a lot like this:

Image

This is blinking out diagnostic code 31. It does so by blinking the engine warning light for 3 long flashes and 1 short flash.

If no codes are currently stored, it will simply flash continually, once per second.

I assume that if more than one code is stored, it will display each one in a repeating sequence, eg. 31, 52, 64, 31, 52, 64...

To clear the codes, simply disconnect the car battery for 20 seconds or so.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-For engine issues, the engine light will flash.
-For ABS the ABS warning light will flash.
-For Traction Control the TCL warning light will flash.
-For Automatic Transmission issues (aka 'limp mode' - stuck in 3rd gear) the 'N' (Neutral) light will flash.

All you have to do is match up the morse code flashing to the list of codes below.

Engine Codes:

11 Oxygen Sensor
12 Air Flow Sensor
13 Intake air temperature sensor
14 Throttle position sensor
15 ISC Motor Position Sensor
21 Engine coolant temperature sensor
22 Crank angle sensor
23 Camshaft position sensor
24 Vehicle speed sensor
25 BARO Sensor (listed as 26 in one info source)
31 Detonation sensor
32 Vacuum sensor
36 Ignition Timing Adjustment Signal
39 Oxygen Sensor
41 Injector system
42 Fuel Pump
43 EGR
44 Ignition coil and power transistor unit (Cylinder 1 & 4)
52 Ignition coil and power transistor unit (Cylinder 2 & 5)
53 Ignition coil and power transistor unit (Cylinder 3 & 6)
55 Idle Air Control Valve/Servo Valve Position Sensor
61 Communications wire with A/T-ECU
62 Intake air control valve position sensor
64 Alternator FR terminal
71 Vacuum control solenoid valve (TCL)
72 Ventilation control solenoid valve (TCL)

The following is from the Chassis Manual.

ABS Codes - Chassis manual section 35B

Check the ABS warning light operates as follows.

1. When the ignition is switched to ON the ABS light should illuminate for about 3 seconds then switch off.
2. When the key is turned to START the light stays on
3. When the key is turned back to ON the light illuminates for about 3 seconds then switches off.
4. If you have anything other than the above check the error codes.

To properly gain the ABS codes you must disconnect the ABS Valve relay which is the top right relay in the engine bay fuse box, looking from the front.
After you have removed this you will also get error code 52. Don't worry, this is normal and will disappear once you replace it.
If you find no codes stored but still have a light behaving different from above then it may be the ABS Valve Relay.

Code
11 Front right wheel speed sensor Open circuit
12 Front left wheel speed sensor Open circuit
13 Rear right wheel speed sensor Open circuit
14 Rear left wheel speed sensor Open circuit
16 Power supply system Low battery
21 Front right wheel speed sensor Short circuit
22 Front left wheel speed sensor Short circuit
23 Rear right wheel speed sensor Short circuit
24 Rear left wheel speed sensor Short circuit

32 Front left ABS sensor rotor Defective teeth
33 Rear right ABS sensor rotor Defective teeth
34 Rear left ABS sensor rotor Defective teeth
41 Front right solenoid valve
42 Font left solenoid valve
43 Rear right solenoid valve
44 Rear left solenoid valve
51 Valve relay problem Stays on
52 Valve relay problem Stays off
53 Motor relay problem Stays off
54 Motor relay problem Stays on
55 Motor system Seized pump motor
63 ABS ECU

TCL codes - Chassis manual section 13C

To check the system using the TCL lamps assuming both are functioning.

Ignition switch at ON and both lights should light up.
Start the engine and both should switch off
With the engine idling switch of the TCL and the TCL OFF light should illuminate
With the TCL on drive for a few minutes at 30 MPH and no lights should come on.

Anything other than this and you should check for codes as shown above.

Code
11 APS Circuit system
12 APS or TPS Circuit system
13 TPS Circuit system
23 Stop lamp switch circuit system
24 TCL switch circuit system
26 Ignition switch (IG2) system
27 TCL-ECU power supply voltage circuit (engine control relay circuit) system

With a flashing N lamp there are two possibilities of what it could be.

If it flashes at 1Hz, once a second, then it will be either,

Input speed sensor
Output speed sensor
Solenoid valve
Out of phase at shift points
A/T control relay system

If it flashes at 2Hz, twice per second, the ATF temperature is too high and you should stop to allow it to cool down.

11, 12 and 14 all relate to Throttle position sensor system (Vehicles without TCL) and Accelerator pedal position sensor system (Vehicles with TCL)

Code
11 Short circuit
12 Open circuit
14 Sensor maladjustment
15 Oil temp sensor system Open circuit
21 Crank angle sensor system Open circuit

Thanks storm, i though it applied just for a tip.

I mentioned since wiring up the mod, i don`t see any engine management light flashing is this normal, all that flashes in the N symbol.

Sorry dave, misread ya - time difference and all that - the G/Box ECU is only for a tip - engine management system is for all FTOs

Sometimes I think the manual isn't translated right. The above article only applied while driving not in diagnosis mode. 2 HZ in diagnosis mode means no codes.

In the Auto Transmission codes, 1hz - what does it mean "out of phase at shift points?"

what does this entail? because i'm having an Auto Transmission issue but am not sure if its speed sensor problem or "out of phase" problem.

thanks!

It means that the input and output sensors don't match up as expected, so one of them is probably goosed.
