Fixing my downshifting problem...

Righteo something to do tomorrow... Is it better to flush it (if you can) or just empty then refill?

You can't flush it, it's just a drain & refill.

You could also have the wrong grade oil in there at the moment. Does it get easier to change when warm?

Okay sorry for being noob aha Actually now that you mention it, yes, when warmer it gets easier to put into gear. But even when my car is properly warmed up, it's still hard to change... I know there's a search button (this should be general knowledge for you guys ) but what oil am I looking for? I'll change it tomorrow and see how I go...

Any 75W-80 GL4 compatible oil will do the trick. For instance I use Valvoline 75W-80 Duragear.

Any thicker than that, say 80W-90 or higher, you'll find it hard to select gears when cold.

I bought some Castrol Manual VMX-80 a couple of weeks ago, but haven't got around to putting it in yet :p

Had a look in supercheap today before I went to the gym and didn't see any 75W - 80W, although the closest thing I saw was a castrol one that was 80W, Any advantage of having 75W-80W than just an 80W oil? If not I'll just grab the castrol one, or was thinking of ordering in some Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75, which is 75W-80W.

hahaha Phil... Funny thing is I tried the pliers and they seemed to have failed, so I used the vice grips that I found in the car to pull the clips out... And yes, I'm the kinda guy that enjoys learning new things and having a go. And as for saving money... The mechanic I took it to was gonna charge me for like 2-3hours labour at a rate of $90/hour, just to change ONE bracket in my car which I supplied the part. Seems a bit f*cking steep to me.

So I changed my tansmission oil with some of this stuff:

Nulon Full Synthetic 75W-85 Smooth Shift Manual Gearbox and Transaxle Oil


And a bottle of this added in there as well:

Nulon Manual Gearbox and Diff Treatment


This is the crap I took outta it: (it looked glittery kind of in the light and a dark brownish colour)


Definitely feel the difference already, waaaay better!!...

But anyways, I am yet to fix my downshifting problem, so far have already changed the f*cked cable mount bracket with dodgy welds from under the hood, so that narrows it down to the cables or the gearstick itself right?

The gearstick itself isnt a problem in itself, as it only controls the cables underneath - so im gonna go ahead and say your cables are effed (or is it possible that they make have come loose/out of alignment??)
Now you have to choose whether or not to get new or good nick second hand ones - id say might as well get the new ones if spending money on them.
Search found not specific part number or what other cars theyre compatible off - although i would assume they are also on another galant or lancer - just head down to bursons theyll be able to get em in for you most likely.

Shame it had to be the most expensive alternative!

It wouldn't be gearbox would it? Like it isn't grinding when I put it in gears, it's just that when you try to downshift to 2nd from any other higher gear it doesn't want to go in smoothly, almost like there is a wall (just like reverse gear) stopping it from going in smoothly and I find myself forcing the c*nt in there...

it COULD be the gearbox, but honestly it does sound like a linkage problem. I would replace the cables before you go poking around and replacing expensive sh*t in the xbox...i mean gbox

My thoughts exactly... The cables aren't FTO specific are they? Well... I hope not :L and yeahh I would definitely try getting brand new ones.

Had a look earlier, took the stereo surround out, the gearknob out and had a look at the bracket that is mounted to the floor of the car. The top right bolt has been snapped off... Will post pic soon. That has some sort of effect right cause when I try to put it in second the corner raises a little bit.
