one inner FTO GPX cv joint will not fit

Post by flateric »

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie and bought myself a '96 FTO GPX from UK last year with original 66000 km. However i bought it with a broken 4-speed tiptronic gearbox slipping gears.. i picked it up and took it to the Netherlands.

A few months later i went to UK to pickup a gearbox from a '95 FTO and swapped it. It also appeared that the input speedsensor was broken so swapped it with a sensor from a Galant (they are identical and much cheaper) As soon as i wanted to put the driveshafts back in the first problem occurred.. my old shafts were 27 splines and i needed the 25 so towed it back to my garage and ordered 25 splines inner cv joints from ebay.. Also ordered new boot kits from Camskill.co.uk to re-do them properly.

Once the drive shafts were ready i jacked up my fto and got them installed.... took it for a testdrive and it drove smooth! first time that i was able to hit and hear the mivec after a good warm up.

Took it back to the garage and left it for another 2 weeks to have some parts powdercoated.. i came in again to check the fto and i found 2 litrs of Dexron III on the garage floor..

I jacked it up and discovered that the driverside shaft (long one) was not completely inside the differential (5mm's left)
That explained the leaking.. so i tried to get it further in but no matter what i tried it just would not go in any further..

Dismounted everything and took the shafts apart again. there's nothing wrong with the cv joints, the splines are looking good and the Driver side CV joint does go in completely on the passengerside but not vice versa..I took the CIR clip off the shafts to make sure that nothing prevents it from going in any further but no go..

I'm getting desperate now because i'd like to get my FTO ready for the summer and do not prefer changing the Gearbox again..

do you have any ideas what could cause this headache ? do i have the wrong CV joints installed ?

thanks!
Eric

There's quite a few different drive shafts for the fto.

If your gearboxes were both 4spd tips the the driveshafts should be identical except if you have a lsd in one of them.

You should have compared lengths of the inner cvs before you put them in to eliminate any doubt about the actual cvs.

they're both 4-speed and i must admit that i didn't even think of comparing the innner cv's because i expected the tip-box to be identical. The replacement box came without inner cv's .the left inner cv fits without a problem, it looks like i need a shorter 25 splines inner cv on the driver side.

how to determine if it has an LSD ?

I'm not too sure but if you jack the front of the car up and put it in neutral then spin one wheel, if the other spins in the same direction (or at all) it means it has an LSD.

Once again i'm not too sure on the subject so no one flame me if I turn out to be wrong

That does not work with a Helical LSD, because when there is no load on the wheels it acts as a open diff. Only definitive way to find out if you have a LSD is to check the code or pull the shafts.

thanks guys! i'm currently 3hrs driving away from my garage so i have to wait till the end of the week to get the gearboxcode but as far as i remember both wheels were turning when i was turning one shaft. when the shafts were out i could see through the differential.. i'm more and more convinced that i need the stubby inner cv joint.

what do you mean by changing the cup over ? i have 2 identical long inner cv joints. one fits on the passenger side and one does not go in all the way.

He just means that you should split the inner CV and just change the bit that goes into the gearbox.

 i didn't know that it was possible to split the CV cup but if i would have the one that fits i wouldn't need to split it, right? i;m going to measure the ones that i have at the end of the week and make a good picture and write the measurements in it.

Yep, just cut the tie on the rubber boot on the CV & it will slide off. Use it in the gearbox.

On a manual box, that stubby CV indicates the box has a viscous style LSD in it, not sure about auto boxes though..

aaaaaahhh :P that's what you mean by splitting, yes i already did that. i have both cv joints splitted from the shafts.

if you look at this pic : http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/dsc01757v.jpg/ it looks like the stubby one is 27 splines instead of 25, right ?

the 2nd and 5th on the pic from the left look like 25 splines and the 2nd is shorter than the 5th. (just maybe 5-10mm) which is exactly what is left before it goes in completely.

The part number for your actual gearbox is MD974108 (as in the entire thing which costs $4800 brand new )

^ that's definitely a LSD diff in that.

Unfortunately, mitsubishi.epc-data.com doesn't tell you which driveshafts fit which box.

    Gearbox Code________Part #___________Years Available
    F5M42-2-V7A1________MD974040________94-95
    F5M42-2-V7A2(LSD)___MD974041________94-95
    F5M42-2-V7A3________MD974602________95-2000
    F5M42-2-V7A4(LSD)___MD974603________ 95-97
    F5M42-2-V7A6(LSD)___MD975854_________97-2000

Interesting that the first set is completely different. But the V7A2 was an LSD, and can only assume this correlates to yours and you in fact have an LSD

All you would need to find is a viscous LSD driveshaft with the right amount of splines (i would say lucky here as the helical is a bit rarer)
Still a b**ch to find though. Surely someone has one lying round though..

Thanks guys! i don't understand why this gearbox code so different to the known ones..not bad that i put in a gearbox with LSD but 4800$ 8O 8O .... i would like to get my FTO running before Summer hits Europe :(

I'm putting the measurements of the oversized "penis" in the picture now and will post it later today. Hopefully someone does have a short 25 spline one spare for a decent price :D
