Cranking but not starting

Post by Daniel2019 »

Rebuilt FTO's engine is cranking and trying to start but it won't kick over.

Everything is plugged in, has fluids including fuel.

Just seems to refuse to kick over and start.. any ideas?

We have put the auto ECU back in (blue plugs) just to cut that out as a cause. Have plugs in engine back for auto ECU but obviously nothing to plug them into. Have bridged the black wires so it thinks it's in P so it will start.

Still nothing..

Do we have a fuse or relay for the fuel pump?

Couldn't find any in the diagrams.

Pump works, we wired it up and used it to drain the old fuel.

1. is fuel reaching engine? Even if pump is working, there could be a blockage in filter or somewhere else

2. are you getting spark?

I cant tell you how to test, but im sure someone can.

Are you sure all your sensors are plugged in and plugged in correctly?

    Remember Connor_1994's engine swap...

the throttle body and ignit5ion failure sensore, got them around the wrong way cause they are the only two plugs in the engine bay that are the same :(
then it was just a vacuum hose at the back of the plenum chamber which is why it wopuldnt idle,
but its all sorted now :D
Traced back to ignition falure sensor #4 pin, was also showing 5V :(
When I asked Connor for the wire colours going to the plug he told me 4 different colours than it was supposed to be :?: Connor then noticed that the throttle position sensor had the colours I was looking for :?
Went to my FTO and saw that the plugs were pluged in opposite to what they should have been
Asked Connor to swap the two plugs over and  the engine started..........but it failed to idle :(
Back out to my FTO and going over my sensors asking Connor to check what I was seeing............The sensor on the firewall, behind the intake manifold didn't have the vacuum hose connected, connected hose and  the engine idled

I double checked the plugs vs the silver car next to it... they were all fine... Dan is currently driving to Brisbane for a week... I might go round his house Monday and double check a particular plug I thought looked dodgy

Hmmmm........deja vu. Ok well the bastard is cranking and is it almost turning over? As in you hear firing but won't continue?

If not, check fuel and check spark again.......

Open the throttle body and spray a little bit of carby cleaner in there. If the engine fires up normal and then dies when all the carby cleaner is depleted you have a fuel issue. Check fuel pump and pull spark plugs out to see if they are damp with fuel. Yes this is a time consuming exercise.

Pull spark plug out and ground (be effing careful when doing this) and check that you can see the spark. Don't need to do this to all plugs but at least one from each coil pack would be good.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Get back to basics dude. Pull a lead off a front coil check for spark. If that's good pull the front injectors off the inlet see if you are getting an injector pulse then work from there. Don't go to specific items as you don't even know why the cars not starting.

Both the coilpacks and injectors work fine, they've been tested. Im thinking that its a fuel pump issue. But nothing I can do until I get back home :(

    They are Shane's injectors.

It's ok, we got it started. We aren't getting any fuel. Got it down to a sh*tty immobilizer or wiring, starts when pump is independently powered ;)

    No, but probably should

Not starting it again until we can get the pump working on its own and everything else is connected. Just wanted to make sure it actually starts before putting everything back together in case it didn't and had to take it back to mechanic.

Read up about getting an injector pulse. Changing the injector to a new working injector doesn't guarantee a working injector.
