Gear damage

Post by FTOwnage »

So over the past two weeks I've set out to replace the bearings/reco my gearbox.

Cracked it open and started on one of the gear shafts. Following the video I have successfully replaced the bearings on the input shaft (these were the bearings making noise).
When it's come time to do the output shaft, following the video I tried to space the bearing out (closest to 1st gear I think) with a chisel as was done in the Mini Gearbox DIY day video and In doing so have taken some material off the gear it is adjacent to.

So my question is: "Have I F#$!$d it?".

Not terribly good at inserting images but here they are.

Wasn't a chisel, was a flat bladed punch  Little bit softer metal than a chisel!

Doesn't look too bad. I'd still use it, just run a very fine file over the damaged area to de-stress the metal - stop it degrading further.

Thanks for that.

Was having a panic attack of sorts.

Taking the shaft and diff to a gearbox shop today anyway.

I'll file the gear myself though.
