Another Noise

Post by BobbyJ »

Hey guys,

So recently the FTO has started to make a noise that has started to get quite annoying. It is most noticeable up to about 3000rpm, after that I believe it is still there but drowned out by the sound of the engine/exhaust. Mainly occurs when accelerating with the pedal in (still makes the noise even if only slightly touching the pedal), however, you can slightly hear the same noise on engine deceleration but much quieter. A good description I found just generally searching on other forums was the sound of sand moving around in a hool-a-hoop so i'm stealing that as it describes the sound perfectly. Ive watched a few videos on pinging/detonation and believe this sounds a bit different and am really hoping this isn't the case. The engine has 230,000km on it, however, so it wouldn't be a stretch. I already use 98 octane so can't get better to see if it improves. Has anyone ever experienced something like this and if so find the solution?

Bet its the tappets. If so, wont do damage, is just annoying. You can get them adjusted so the noise goes away, but willcost a bit in labour. Best doing it when getting the belts done.

I don't think it's the tappets. I rarely even hear them on start-up at this stage and if i do it's generally gone within a minute. As for the flex pipe I'll have to have a look tonight when I get home but it's not really a very loud noise, but could just be a small bust?

What would you suggest looking for with the A/C? To be honest I don't really have much experience in that area.

Take the belt off and spin the pulley by hand see if it makes weird noises

Actually, all the pulleys on the drivers side of the engine will make a noise a bit like that when they are on their way out. If the noise seems to be coming from that area, I have found that if you squirt each pulley with a little water from one of those cheap misting water bottles while the engine is running and listen for a pitch change, you maybe able to narrow it down to the culprit (there are 3 pulleys with bearings that tend to go, the aircon compressor and the 2 tensioner pulleys). Also look for a slight wobblein the pulleys.

+1 to Daniel.......sounds like the Aircon belt tensioner that's worn out. Big round thing on the driver's side of the engine I think closest to the ground that isn't a pulley.

Nah, not what I've got... I've got a whistle in between 2 and 3000 rpm... comes from the heater core when the air con on and only under acceleration.
