Now its got sort of a grinding noise? Coming from the engine bay on start up. Would that be the stepper too?

Only when cranking starter? Would be fucked ring gear or missing tooth on flywheel, ex Mrs. 2019s car had that problem.

It happens for a few seconds after the car starts when cold.
