engine oil and auto gearbox oil change - easy answer?
Hi guys im after a easy answer about what oils to use as from what I have read its confusing.
I have a 95 non mivec 2.0v6, has around 220.. on clock, doesnt have tapping problem at all, i live in Hobart tasmania so gets cold here I dont speed or abuse cars so im a cruising sort.
Will a 10/40 oil be ok and what brand will do?
Also id like to change gearbox oil on my triptronic auto so is there
a guide and type of oil ect also, gearbox is fine so will I need full change.
Does gearbox use same filter as engine?
Cheers guys.

I use castrol Edge 5w 30 fully synth

I'd personally suggest Nulon over any other brand auto fluid by the way

I might have to give it a go myself.. Nulon seems to be known for blending fluids quite well (albeit rarely spoken about for some odd reason)..Sahin wrote:I'd personally suggest Nulon over any other brand auto fluid by the way
I changed mine out with Castrol Dex III just the other week, to more apparent gear changes, which is pissing me off a bit

Which fluid would you suggest? I've always strayed away from the multi-vehicle fluids, as a 'catch all' doesn't seem ideal.. Thoughts?

I used Nulon engine oil in my old 89 Celica, to no dramas at all.. for a good 5-6 years.bartyboo wrote:Nulon Hi-Tech Fast Flowing Synthetic Engine Oil - 10W-40, 6 Litre

The engine has 380ks on it today, and I'm confident it'll happily keep going...
As for your auto trans.. Around 4.4L will come out when you drop it, but another ~4 will remain in the trans - torque converter, etc..
Ideally you'll drop it, drive for awhile, and drop it again to change as much out as you can..
There are other ways, such as removing cooler lines and running the engine, replacing the fluid that comes out while it's running, but I feel the former is easier/safer.

If you struggle to find anything, it's very straight forward.bartyboo wrote:Thanks people I might try Nulon in engine and box, as for the oil change in box

The plug is massive. ~22mm beast of a thing on the bottom right hand side of the trans (looking from the front of the car)..
I got to mine without even jacking it up; you can see it by looking between the bumper and wheel.
You can get more out with the car flat anyways

So 3 bolts on bottom and drain oil from them why warm? Replace filter
and put new oil in or am I missing something, read something about oil lines and isnt old oil
still going to mix with new oil? Noob..

Then what the hell did I drain out? lolSahin wrote:Nah you're thinking of the manual box, on the auto the is 4 little bolts that drain it on the bottom of the box
Is it different on the GR?
Edit: I managed to find a pic from an auto post, I have the same drain plug
This post might be useful for you, barty.. Given you wanted pics

You want it warm so it drains out quicker, and easier. Same story with the engine oil.bartyboo wrote:So 3 bolts on bottom and drain oil from them why warm? Replace filter

You'll get about half out during the drain, refill and drive for awhile (left mine for a week, even).. The new and old fluid will mix
Drain and refill again.. This will cleanse it further..
Imagine emptying half a bucket of muddy water, and refilling it with clean water.. 50/50 mix.
Repeat it again, and you'll end up with mostly clean water...
Let the engine cool before throwing anything back in, too.. Just to be safe.
