Engine & Timing.... knock sound ???

Post by dj_ules »

Hi Guys, I'm having issues with my fto at the moment, i've taken it to a mechanic who hasn't really worked on one before.

He's replaced the rocker cover gasket, water pump and altenator. (battery has been flat for about a month)

When i spoke to him, he said hes marked out the timing and clamped down something and put it back together, when he started it the engine jumped back and the engine is making a knock sound which wasnt there before.

I'm hoping this guy hasn't damaged my engine.
Any one know what this could be ?

Thanks

Well if he's done the water pump he's had the cam/timing belt off and may not have put it back correctly, could be out 1 or 2 teeth (or more) or could be something else entirely.

Too hard to determine even if the belt did slip a couple of teeth shouldn't knock.

What type of mechanic you go to. Not worked on the Fto is no excuse as the engine is almost the same as any other Mitsubishi out there.

Bent valves would cause a knock!!

Yeah that's what i thought, any mechanic should be able to work on any engine. There was no problem with the engine before i took it down which is a real concern
Don't the valves get bent from a timing belt snapping ? So I'm assuming ? He says hes checked everything and timing has been put on correctly. Could this have anything to do with the timing tensioner not being adjusted ?

Could do. But one or two teeth out wouldn't bend a valve. When we did Long's timing belt (mostly Martin) it was 3 teeth out on the intake cam on the rear bank and wasn't knocking. Granted, it did run a lot better after we changed it, but no weird noises.

What kind of knock is it? Is it coming from a pulley slapping or is it coming from more towards the centre of the engine? Can you get a video of it?

He didn't really provide much info, he said he started it up and there was a knocking sound from the engine he didnt like he decided to turn it off after 30sec idle. :(

on a serious note Bennoz, you think maybe hes dropped something in there ?

What kind of mechanic is he if he can't diagnose an engine knock? Get him to diagnose and fix it or tell him you'll take it to another mechanic and he can pay for it.

There are several things it can be and we can't diagnose it over the internet

Yes a washer from the intake manifold could have been dropped in to the intake if he wasn't careful.

If a washer has been dropped in, start looking for a new engine.

Just went down to check it out myself, Cams are all top dead centre and are not out of allignment, the noise seem to be coming from the front cam only and its going from left to right he believes it has something to do with the variable valve timing.

the back cams are running fine and no noise. one thing he has noticed is there is no oil being at the top and it looking very dry, hes going to disconect the battery and test the new altenator and hes going to put a cleaner thru the engine and then put new oil in see if that fixes the problem thinks maybe the oil pump is blocked???. i didnt get a video cause i didnt wanna start it up incase it stressed the engine. He said he checked the valves and nothing seems to be damaged or burnt or anything like that.

Any one know where the plug is to connect it up to the computer ?

Im willing to give this guy a chance, he's been really good and patient and has explained himself quite well over the work he has done so i'm not doubting his work which he has completed successfully.
Its just this tapping/knocking sound form the front cams that has appeared when it wasn't there before.

Meh, obviously the problem is something he's touched. Really should be able to diagnose it.

Hi guys

Still cannot figure out where this knock is coming from, the engine has been flushed to clean any bad oil and sludge new oil put in, engine seemed to run fine after running an hour yesterday without any knocking noises i was told, but the knock is still there when starting it up. Timing belt was not changed or removed it was locked into place with clamps and has been checked four times everything appears to be aligned correctly, plugs and the magenecore leads were checked and appear to be fine.

the knock is very sporadic

I have a video if you guys can please take some time and watch let me know what you guys think.

11 sec, 30 sec, 53 sec , 108, 113

Like the others have mentioned before. He may have dropped a washer into the intake when he had the rocker covers off. If so, the damage is done...

Your problem is that the oil cap is on backwards

I agree, washer has been dropped down in the lower intake manifold.
You can hear the washer bouncing around in the combustion chamber.
Engine is now f**ked.

The upper intake manifold bolts to the lower manifold.
It sits on 2 studs in the outer most mounting holes, the rest of the holes use a bolt.
The 2 nuts that go onto the studs have a washer each.
If you take the nuts off and don't realise there are washers, then when you remove the upper manifold the washer/s can fall off into the lower manifold.
The washer/s will then fall through an open valve into the combustion chamber.

Take the engine cover off and see if there are still the 2 washers under the 2 nuts.
