Factory Oil Grade Recommendation?

Post by Invader_X »

I have looked everywhere, what exactly is the recommended oil viscosity for our cars? FTO Mivec GPX 1995 to be exact?

My Mitsubishi GTO shows acceptable oils throughout a range of temperatures.

Does anyone know?

Everyone is going on about masking tappet noises with oil grades and not to do it. But I want to experiment between 5w30, 10w30, 5w40 and 10w40 to see which is best or which I like for my car the most - not necessarily trying to mask tappet noise.

Can anyone advise?

I was looking or trying to find out what the factory manual says.. That thread is an opinion about oils.

Should have clarified: What did the engineers who designed our engines prescribe for oil grade as per owners manual.

Oil is a very subjective topic, everyone has a different preference. I like to follow the owners manual.

Thanks for the help though.

The only thing the factory manual specifies is the API Classification = "SG or higher"

To understand what that means:

The reason it does not specify a grade, is because the grade differs per country depending on the climate of said country. We've never seen a grading chart for the FTO - more than likely because it was never intended to be exported to any other country apart from Japan.

So the reason all we have to go on is opinion, is because that is all we have. One can make a logical choice based on where you live. I live near Sydney & use 10w-40 semi synthetic for example. Have done for years, never had a problem.
