Power Steering Belt Shredded?

Post by Invader_X »

Image

This happened during my latest drive, car just suddenly made a very loud screech and then I see a portion of the belt gone fallen off the pulley now this belt is moving left and right.

I'm guessing previous owner/dealer did not torque the tensioner properly causing the belt to slip?

Do you guys recommend looking at or replacing other parts while I get this part fixed?

Just to confirm this is the power steering belt?

Thanks!

It could be that the belt was just over due replacement.
There have been issues with crank pulleys getting a bit worn as they are a two-piece and have a rubber damper joining them and this can get tired but not sure it would cause this.
If it were me and you haven't notice any pulley noises before (which could be tensioner pulleys on their way out) I would just put a new PS belt on asap and see how it goes.

Thanks Rob, I was thinking of going all the way and doing the cambelt, water pump, tensioners etc along with this since the car only has a sticker saying cambelt was done at 96,000 kms.

I will be getting a power steering belt ASAP though.

What kms is it on now?
If you're not sure if it has been done and suspect it hasn't been looked after then it would be wise to do all of the above when you can but at a garage you will be looking at approx 3 hours labor I think plus parts, it's a pain of a job and has to be done spot on.
I've done the cambelt myself once and it took me a weekend taking my time and getting stuff wrong and having to re-do it, i'm sure I will be a lot quicker next time. I reckon a couple of people on here have done it in about 3-4 hours.

The car runs amazingly smooth and quiet no noises apart from random lifter ticks here and there.

I kinda want to do everything for piece of mind and that I do plan on Keeping this car forever along with my GTO but currently wanting to get into the house market.

Did you need to fully lift the engine to do the PS belt and the 100k service?

These cars are almost identical to the GTO only that the everything is slightly smaller.

The car is at 141,000 kms.

Any chance do you know how long a clutch kit change should take on these cars?

No idea on clutch, only ever owned autos.
PS belt is quite easy, just jack the car and get it on axle stands first.
Engine doesn't need to come out for the cambelt change.

Don't need to angle engine, just need a long 14mm ring spanner for alt belt, done from up top, and the PS belt is done from the idler underneath.

I don't have spanners so might as well buy the tools,

I'm guessing I will need the one with the bend at the end? Like this:

Not necessarily. As long as there is some offset. This is what I use:
