Aftermarket starter motor?

Post by spetz »

Has anyone used an aftermarket starter motor for the FTO?

My starter motor would work if connected directly to 12v (i.e the solenoid was bypassed, so that doesn't work) and now the starter motor itself does not work anymore.

I am not really comfortable using a 20 year old starter motor from another car.
The cost of the solenoid + brush kit from amayama is similar to the cost of a new aftermarket starter motor which is a lot more convenient and faster for me.

Does anyone know whether they are okay quality wise, and whether there are any better/worse ones out there?

Or alternatively if any of the starter motors from newer Mitsubishis are the same?

I am looking at this starter motor and it has listed the 380 and Lancer as compatible vehicles:

HJ Galant ones work, but finding quality ones is the hard part. Apparently OEM FTO starters are heavier duty than most of the aftermarket ones that 'fit'.

Do aftermarket FTO labeled starter motors have a reputation for not fitting properly?

I removed the starter motor and bench tested it.... the pinion gear extended really fast and motor spun up no issues so it seems my problem is elsewhere.
I'll start a new thread since this one is now irrelevant
