Timing Belt Swap

Hi everyone,

I did a search however didn't quite find the answers I was looking for.

I want to do a timing belt swap on my MIVEC motor.
The belt I want to use is a Gates one, however I cannot find a kit that comes with the idler pulley etc.

So, my questions:
1. What part numbers are the idler pulley, tensioner pulley and anything else that should be in a "kit"? Since Koyo is the OEM supplier, where do I get these from?
2. How viable is this as a DIY? I have never done a timing belt before, however the car is not a daily and hence there is no rush in it
3. Since the belt will be off, is there a benefit in adding adjustable cam gears and getting them dialed on a dyno (along with tuning) or are they set in the ideal spot for stock cams? I know people with the 6G74 from the Magna use adjustable cam gears with good results
4. Anything else I should do or look out for? I will be adding new accessory belts, and considering a hydraulic tensioner and water pump for good measure

If you take your time and follow the workshop manual it is quite simple. Hardest part is lining up the cams and setting the hydraulic tensioner. A set of cam lockers would come in handy.

No point doing cam gears. Tuner has told me stock timing on the MIVEC engine is optimum when he was playing with mine, if anything can gain 2kw. :lol:

And definitley do the hydraulic tensioner and water pump. May as well do them while you're in there. As well has half moon seals if they're leaking.

I've been watching a few youtube videos where they use zipties to hold the belt and cams in place which seems like a good idea.
Are there any special tools I need, for example that tool used to get the tension right? Not sure of the name.

So, seeing as I will need to build up the kit, the parts I need are:
Timing belt
Idler pulley
Tensioner pulley
Water pump
Hydraulic tensioner
What seals are normally change at this time?

Workshop manual says to use a torque wrench and a special tool to set tension. Tool can be purchased from Meek. I just adjust it by feel now.

Zip ties will make it a bit easier but still fiddly and even though I've done it a dozen times it's still a pain.

Seals you wanna replace are

4 cam seals
crank seal
half moon seals

It's easy to overtighten if you haven't done it before.

I thought the idea of how tight that offset pulley should be is such that the pin can be easily taken out and inserted back into the hydraulic tensioner?


Bennoz, I've seen that before, I don't know the pressures that are exerted there but it seems like there is potential for damaging the cam gears since only a small surface area of the nut/bolt is contacting the teeth.
Can the old timing belt be folded there to prevent them from moving?

You could also zip tie not just the new belt over the cam gears, but the cam gears to one another in the same place where the bolt is pictured I assume?

Eh, worked for me for the 3 belt changes I've done. It's only holding against 1 or 2 valves that are under compression, not a huge load.

Does anyone know if Gates make a kit for our cars?

Otherwise I need to source everything separately and I am not sure of what brands are good vs not so good

From my research Gates is a better quality belt and seeing as the car will be used on track and the top and bottom end have been rebuilt (plus ported heads etc) I rather go Gates and then assemble the rest of the kit by buying the part separate

Dayco are one of the top manufacturers of belts.

I've got a "SUN" branded belt from camskill and I'm running 200kw with no issues. :lol:

Yup, that will do just fine.

Says it comes with 5 seals. Which will be the 4 cam seals and 1 crank seal.

While you're there it's good practice to replace the half moon seals. Because if they start leaking you need to pull everything off to replace. And they're only like $30 or so from Mitsi last I checked.

Although reading the listing it states the belt has 257 teeth. Not sure if this is a listing error or what. But the MIVEC FTO engine is 232 teeth.

I'm still inclined to go Gates but will settle for Dayco if I cannot easily access the other parts necessary.

Yup, I know the MIVEC timing belt is 232 teeth so I'd confirm before buying. The link was just for an example rather than the item I plan to purchase
