Syntax's 4G93T Build

Post by syntax »

Since the motor is getting delivered tomorrow, I thought id start a build thread.

What the goal is

Make a zippy FTO with far more usable power and torque but limited to levels without crazy torque steer (Hence no 4G63T)

1. What i got

1.1 Lancer GSR C5MA 1998 4G93T DOHC Long Block w/Turbo
1.2 4G93T MD327395 ECU (flashable :) )
1.3 Full Loom.
1.4 GSR MAF.

What i paid

$2010 Delivered inc GST

2. What i have learned so far

2.1 turbo inlet is inline with the clutch slave and will need to be moved or converted to pull type.
2.2 Evo 5/6 ECU can be used on the same loom/engine (may be good if i exceed the 180 Load cells as this is the GSR ECU max)
2.3 Using Evo ECU means;
2.3.1 Evo MAF
2.3.2 Evo Injectors
2.3.3 *note* both a possible on the GSR ECU but would require no dialing in of the injectors
2.4 the FTO F5M42-2 gearbox will bolt straight to it (No need to FWD convert the AWD box and speedo will be correct)

3. What i expect to be a issue

3.1 Loom
3.2 Gearbox Clutch Slave

If you go to Lancer forums (as this is a popular swap) you can get advice as to what you can do with the clutch slave cylinder.
Also maybe a 1.8 Lancer gearbox would be better suited to the turbo torque as it has a lower final drive.

Other than that make sure to document the process and put pictures up. Great work and good luck :)

One of the things I have also learned is the 4 NA bangers come with a F5M42-1 and the FTO is a F5M42-2 which is the size of the output shaft diameter and splines.

using a 4cly NA box would mean i would have to f**k with the hubs.

I think the hubs are the same, it's the differential side of the driveshafts that are different and you can always use an FTO diff.
I think as well that the last number signifies something with the synchros (double synchro 2nd gear maybe?) and not the driveshaft size (even though Lancer and FTO driveshafts are in fact not the same).

She's beautiful!
I think the TD04 is way too tiny of a turbo and you're better off getting a TD05.
I drove a friends 4G61T powered Lancer which is a 1.6 with a TD04 and it would spool real fast but run out of puff too early. With a TD05 from a 4G63 VR4 Galant it spooled by 3,000rpm, but with an extra 200cc with the 4G93 it should spool faster

TD05/6 do not bolt up to the cm5a manifold. Driven motorsports in NZ do a TD05 kit for these engines but you're looking at 1000NZD+ postage.

In my opinion there's nothing wrong with the TD04, these engines put out 158kw atf which judging by the requirements stated by the OP will be more than enough.

Can't wait to see this progress. Plenty of the lancer/mirage guys have been using fto engines for a long time now, good to see one in reverse :)

BI65ND, there must be a TD05 that fits in place of a TD04 though? I know some of the later Evo ones wouldn't, but the Evo I-III should?

silverGPX, yes, at 7,500rpm and with little torque.
Even though the kw figures are very similar, the driving experience will be completely different

Nope spetz they don't. If you want a TD05 or 6 you need a custom manifold. Evo 1-3 is the reverse setup to 4-6s as well.

SilverGPX as spetz said they're completely different. Also the gains to be had from some simple tuning and breathing mods are a lot greater with the turbo over the NA.

Surely with all the aftermarket there has to be a company that makes a manifold to fit a TD05?

there is many manifolds for them but really not needed
I have a small TD05 spools up quick but doesnt run out off puff no different to a TD04 in behaviour. People told me that it was to small blah blah but was spot on!

And dont forget the 4g doesnt rev as high either not that with a good setup you need the extra RPMs anyway

and as for tuneability thats your answer right there little more boost better breathing/zorst and fuel and bingo that 150kw at he fly is now at the wheel

The 6a12 may have 150kw at peak but its not usable power. I want mid power punch and torque that only turbo can provide under 2L.

As for the turbo. I have not decide yet but its either going to be a TD04-19T as this turbo turned out great on the GTO or I have my TD05-16G from my evo 9 kicking around the garage but would need one of these to bolt it straight up.

Exactly why I went for small snail quick spool and usable power with much more mid range torque. Think this will be great project pretty smooth and easy conversion would say.

I personally took a TD05 to a workshop to get it fitted onto a 4G61T engined CC Lancer and it was a direct bolt on job besides a new dump pipe needed.
Is it possible you're confusing the TD04 from the WRX which indeed has a different bolt pattern to the Mitsubishi TD04?
Unless I am wrong and the 4G61T does not use a TD04 but something different?

No I am not mistaken. I owned one of these engines and looked into the different upgrade options. The ce series is different to cc. Evo 4+ turbos were a twin scroll unlike the cm5a and earlier model evos and therefore have a different flange. So are you sure you're not confusing the different series'?

Syntax I like your idea of going the TD04-19g route. This has been used a lot with very good gains. From memory the standard cm5a was only 13g? There was one floating around on ebay and gumtree recently, but I think hes selling it as a complete kit with a standalone, manifold, etc.
