Yeah as rob said... I really don't see the point... more layers of paint would just have the same effect... but what evs dude... If anyone reads the diy and wants to chuck a clear coat over it it's up to them.

How fkn negative this club has become.

But what about a clearcoat for some sort of protection from stones etc

That's hardly negative man.....

Was just trying to help actually haha, from experience, painted a few sets and seen how easily they can chip with less paint and no clear..
But they look awesome atm and if u did a good prep and enough coats, then I'm sure the paint should stay on pretty well.

Anytime you paint a wheel it's going to chip... I'd go powder coat over paint anyday

Unless you actually spend the money and spray with a compressor or powdercoat them, this is the best you can do to get a matte black finish.

But most people doing it themselves don't have access to the equipmemt or don't want to spend the money powdercoating, and this guide is for them.

And best thing is if you do get a chip you can just spray over it, whereas if you have a clear you can't do that.

And theres no such thing as anti chip, everything will chip eventually.

:facepalm2:

Proper touch up would involve a slight rub back and a spray. Which is a lot easier to do on a wheel without clear coat.

Even powdercoating and ceramic coatings can chip if something hits it hard enough. Like a large stone getting flung at the wheel while going 110 on the freeway.

Hell, even the alloy can get chipped if something hits it hard enough.

Of course you can get coatings that can resist chips caused by smaller rocks better than paint can, but they are still susceptible to chipping.

Say if we want d to paint our wheels and someone has already painted them. Do I have to sand off the previous paint and then paint them again or can we just sand down the imperfections, clean, prime then paint?

I suppose you could get away with that but if the coat under starts peeling its gonna take off your new paint.

I'd just get my hands on a belt sander or orbital sander, get it back to bare alloy and start from scratch. Will give a better result then anyways.

No worries. I'm actually not good with paint.. but seems to be OK if you don't cut corners. That's one of the things I've learnt over the last few years. Shortcuts aren't worth it.

If you are unsure of how good of a prep job was done on previous rims.. Then get them rubbed back/sand blasted/soda blasted/media blasted .... and ensure the correct thing is then done... I think it is about $40 a wheel to get sand blasted, but worth it...
I just had to add it ......
