DIY for changing inner cv boot/remove drive shaft.

Post by adzski »

Jack up the car to a decent high so you can get under it comfortably, put some jack stands down and remove the jack.

1. remove the nut from the hub/ cotter pin. to remove the pin you will need to bend it straight so it can be pulled through, i used a flat head screw driver and pliers. bolt for the hub is 32mm, these are on usually petty tight so, get someone to sit in the car and push the brakes, u will also need a brake bar. if you don't have anyone to sit and push on the brakes, you can remove your wheel and push out the centre cap, put the wheel back on and remove the jack, now you can undo the nut.

2. pushing the drive shaft thread/bolt back through the hub. thread the nut on drive shaft bolt till it is flush, do not tighten it, now hit the nut with the hammer, the drive shaft will start to push back, now undo the nut slightly and hit it again so it get pushed back more, keep doing this until its almost pushed out.

3. Undo the nut from the tie rod and remove it. once the nut is removed (from memory it is a 17mm) you will need a hammer, you need to strike the metal part that the tie rod bolt goes through, eventually it will be able to be lifted out.

here is a video, if you are confused (you only need to remove the bottom nut & cotter pin)

4. remove the bolts from the coilover or strut depending on what you have. from memory they are 17mm, use a ring spanner and a socket.

5. now the hub will fall forward, now push the driveshaft back until it is no longer in the hub.

6. now if you are replacing the inner cv boot, you can do what i did which is lazy. i left the inner cv joint still attached and cut the boot, now drive shaft will just pull out. if you are remove the drive shaft, get a flat head screw driver and try to lever the inner cv joint out.

7. cleaning bearing/shaft. to remove the bearing from the shaft, you need circlip pliers to remove the circlip. clean the shaft and bearing and now put the boot on. use bit of grease to lubricate the shaft and put the bearings back on and re-attached the circlip.

another video to help explain, the inner cv joint starts at 9:56

8. grease the bearing and put sh*t loads of great in the boot.

9. put the drive shaft back into the inner cv joint

10. grab a jack and jack-up the hub, you will need to put the drive shaft back through the hub, make sure it doesn't fall out of the inner cv joint, once that is done, jack it up bit higher and allign it with the coilover/strut put the bolts/nuts back in and tighten.

11. now re-attach the tie rod. push the hub, so you can put the tie rod back in, put the nut on and tighten. if it spins and you can't tighten it, give the top of the tie rod a decent hit and try and tighten, if that doesn't work, move your steering wheel around and try and tighten. if that doesn't work get someone to stand on the top of the tie rod, this should 100% as it was what i had to do.

12. tighten hub bolt, make sure its really tight. also you will have to align it so the cotter pin can go through the hole. it should look the same as when you started.

13. now get underneath the car and slip the boot over the inner cv joint, tighten your clamps and you are finished.
