Tell the boy if he wants a 6A13 he has to do it himself! I suggest checking compression on all cylinders under equal circumstances and going from there.
I fix cars.

Car now won't go about 6500 (it was ok 2 weeks ago before this overheating issue)
I've swapped out the temp sensor for the ecu (the larger one not the small one for the gauge) and it still won't go above 6500.

Just got error codes out of it and showing only one, 31 - Det sensor.
We haven't messed around this area at all.

So is it the connector or det sensor is knackered (bizarre?) or is it just registering a load of det when it shouldn't be?

I don't like the look of you oil cap 8O
It didn't look like that when I looked at it on the roadside.
You can keep working at it, but I reackon you have done a head gasket/cracked head/cracked block.
Driving it without any coolant, ie your first post, totally fuked it.

Now go and prove me wrong and fix it ;)
Go and get a cooling system pressure test done, or buy a pressure tester and do it yourself.

The engine won't go above 6500 or enter Mivec without the Detonation sensor in specs.

This might help...

Thanks Phil, didn't think to check the manual.

The last drive - when it still won't go over 6500 and getting det sensor error the temp was ok and there's no crap on the oil cap.
Messed with the connector for the det sensor (the cable was tight/pinched a little against a bolt but shouldn't be that), i've reset the ecu and will take it for another spin later with crossed fingers but yeah not convinced the head is ok.

Timing belt is done with the new water pump and new hydraulic tensioner and pulleys.
Definitely confirmed the Det sensor was at least one of the causes of not revving past 6000.

Cabling all melted.

Just fitted a replacement from dstocks and putting it all back together.

All back together and first test drive today - all good so far and now revs past 6000, no overheating issues.
Will see how it is over the next few days.

Thanks for the help guys.

It's had a new radiator, thermostat, thermostat housing, water pump, timing belt plus pulleys and tensioners, det sensor, crank sensor, lambda sensor, ht leads and probably some other stuff that i've forgot to mention. Yes fingers crossed all is now ok, had enough of working on Rowans car.
He's taken it to work for the first time since buying it over 2 months ago, I get my FTO back :)
