So, if someone uninsured hits you, and either does a lot of damage, or enough to write the car off. then you have next to zero chance of getting your car repaired; or recovering money.

Seriously, at a minimum buy 3rd party.

You never know when you need insurance, despite how good YOU drive on the road.

I too strongly suggest you get 3rd party ASAP. If somebody hits you, you tell your insurance about it and they can help you recover the money by dealing with the other person's insurance, even if you only have 3rd party.
If you hit someone else, you'd have to pay everything out of your own pocket. Like Dan said, would you happily afford to buy somebody a new car if you wrote it off or pay them a few grand for minor damages? What if it was a multi car crash and you were the one at the back who rear ended the person in front of you who already crashed into another car, you'd be liable for all cars.

I know it sounds like a rant, nothing personal, just wanted to stress the importance of having at least 3rd party. Plus it's cheap, even in a 'high risk' area, won't effect it that much, it's not comprehensive after all.

No one should be allowed to drive without 3rd party property as the absolute minimum!

From memory, at 21 I was paying $430 for 3rd party property + fire and theft. I paid $630 at 18. Seriously get it ASAP.

I'm 18, just got my 3rd party fire and theft earlier this week, about $57 a month.
As soon as I get my restricted license, i will get comprehensive, it's about $80/Month

That only covers the injury to people, not property. So for example, if you were to get in a prang and break someones arm, their medical would be covered by your CTP, but not their car.

Yup. In my opinion, as many others have said, people should be required to have AT LEAST third party for damage to property, too.

I am 20 and just bought insurance for my 2000 FTO GPX.

Only SGIO and Just Car would insure it, and SGIO would only insure it for an agreed value of $7450 (when I paid $9000, and it was insured for $15,000 by the last owner). Just Car offered to insure it with an agreed value of $9000, and after a phone call, pushed it up to $10,000. The premium went up by an extra $100 for that. I tried putting it under Dad's name to lower the premium, but ended up putting us both as joint owners, because Just Car only really looks at the youngest driver anyway.

End result is a premium of $1658 with an excess of $450 plus age excess of $650 (total $1100), agreed value of $10,000. Included in the insurance is $500 for the non-standard music system.

In summary: can't wait to be 25...

I am very late to the party on this one, but one option is to go through a broker as we only have access to the direct market. Some brokers have access to policies which do not have an undisclosed excess, so you do not need to note young drivers on the policy. They can therefore place the policy for example under your dads name which keeps the premium low assuming he hasn't had any past claims or convictions. If you drive and have a crash, you will only be subject to the basic and age excess, for example $600 base and $400 age = $1,000 total excess.

I would strongly recommend getting comprehensive insurance. Do not do not go with racq if you do decide to go with third party insurance. If someone hits you and YOu have third party insurance but they are not insured or they do not make a claim RACQ will do absolutely nothing. They will make you all the leg work and chase the person up to fix your car. They only help if you have comprehensive insurance.
