It was given to me by a good family friend. They were just gonna scrap it because they didnt think it would pass rego and didnt have any need for it.

On startup it apparently gets up to nearly 100 degrees in temperature, then goes back down to normal operating temp. Said it was some sort of delay issue where the fan kicks in later than it should. Ideas?

Checked the cooling system?

And that would not cause rego failure, what is Really wrong with it? Lol

Nothing else as far as I can tell. I havent had a chance to have a good look over it yet, will do that tomorrow.

There is no rust or accident damage or anything like that. Just need to check all the lights and boots and stuff in the morning.

The coolant system is just running on water so when I replace it with coolant I will see if I can find out whats going on with it.

Yeah im not going to be driving it until the temp issue is sorted. I like the head gasket the way it is...

Astron are you implying that using water is causing the temperature to get too high? Ive never heard of that before

Yeah, but that wouldnt explain why its going up and then back down. The fan is kicking in too late from what Ive been told.

As Sahin said.

Water boils quicker, so the fans dont have enough time to kick in, the sensors arent keeping up with the reading, so its peaking faster.

Hence why you dont use pure water, among other reasons in a cooling system.

I would bet it that if you replace with proper coolant, the problem is sorted.

How do I know this? Cause a friend did the same thing with his Shivic.

Regardless, thanks Dan (and Sahin, kinda ) I will flush the coolant tomorrow and see how it goes.

Part of the reason that coolant is also called AntiBoil and Antifreeze! higher boiling temp and lower freezing temp... Boiling = BAD! Freezing = BAD!
I had the same problem with my civic lol

At the very least, use 50% coolant 50% water

Even if it doesnt fix the immediate problem, it should be done regardless, so.

Only other thing would be the temperature sensor for the thermo fans, but I'd put that at fault last.

Just do a general service and the car should be fine.

Instead of letting it idle to heat up.
Start the car and drive it straight away, im not saying rev it high just drive it. with the wind passing through the radiator it will not matter if the fans kick in or not.
So if temp still gets high I would say that it is not the fan but something else. IMO
It could have an air lock in it as well, That can cause wierd temp readings
If you are going to flush the radiator then I would suggest that you replace the thermostat, should be around $20.
Make sure that when u flush it you turn the heater on to full and leave it on full while your refilling it.
I would also make sure you use a good quality coolant.

Thanks for the advice guys. A proper flush of the system will get rid of the airlock correct?

Needs manual conversion.
