HID legal in NSW?

Post by Xeno »

Im thinking of getting HID on my GPX, are they legal in NSW? What is the highest we can get, 6000k? or 8000k?

Either that or is HID completely illegal in our cars. o-o

GPR comes stock with HID's
Cops over here look at me funny when i tell them "FTO" when they ask me what car it is so chuck them in, and tell them they came stock with the car.
Nothing they can do if they were stock

Until you run into a proper inspector from NSW Department of Transport, or have issues getting your car road worthy when trying to sell. Best to check with the department of transport over the phone and find out from them what you can and can't do.

I believe fitting them as driving lights is fine but fitting them to high and/or low beam is illegal in QLD as the light housing is not designed to handle the extra glare that these lights create. Putting them in a standard FTO's headlight may cause you to dazzle and blind oncoming drivers which is a major concern.

Here's a pretty good run down on the issue from RACQ. I doubt that NSW law is very different.

Pretty sure 6000k HID has over 200 lumen. And also our cars dont have washer or like auto level things.

So its pretty much impossible to get HID on our cars legally? (GPX)

Given that the GPvR's have them, I would start by looking at what is different in their lights compared to others. Dstocks or Bennoz would probably have a better idea about this. The laws allow you to change them so long as you meet all of the requirements. It's just not as simple as buying a kit and putting them in though.

Hids are illegal (doesn't matter if it came stock or not, given most are ripped out during import)
... Saying that, the Fto has projector headlights, and hence doesn't glare people to death.
And hids are pretty common now,
Hide your ballasts, dont blind people and you will be fine.
Iv had mine in for ages 8)

Any headlight modification is illegal period. They're considered part of the safety features of the vehicle, much the same as seat belts & airbags.

Lmao this thread is still going.

As Ben and astron said, FACTORY (i.e. GPR's only) are legal with the stock ballasts and the hids 6k is stock?

Any thing else is illegal, and while you may not get caught, don't be surprised if your insurer wipes you when you have accident.

If you'd read the thread and more importantly the information that I linked to, you'd realise that they can in fact be fitted after market legally. You have to jump through more hoops then just whack them in though.

For HIDs to be legal, they need to be self-leveling, and have washers, so even FTO factory HIDs are illegal according to the ADRs.
LED ALL the things.
