Moving to SA

Post by PHIL069 »

Hi SA'ians,
I have just applied for a job with an Agricultural dealer as a mechanic. They are going to phone interview me tomorrow.
The town this position is located in is...Wudinna.

Would I enjoy living in this town with my misses and kids?
My misses loves to shop, it's 2 hours away from Whyalla.
Would I be too far away for SA FTO cruises/DIY's?

They also have jobs in...Cleve, Cummins, Kimba and Crystal Brook.
If I get a choice would any of these towns be a better choice?

or
Am I just crazy even thinking about it?

I don't know a particular lot about SA outside of Adelaide. (and I don't even know Adelaide that well, only been living here three years! ) But based on the knowledge I have (google searching) I'll see what I can say.

Would suggest that unless you're super enthused about driving long distances ( G-maps is suggesting about 6 hours from Wudinna to Adelaide) it might be a stretch for club-related things. That being said, I guess it's not so much an issue of us accommodating you as it is you wanting to travel. If getting to FTOAus things regularly, and Adelaide too I suppose, then Crystal Brook is closest at just over 2 hours away from Adelaide. Bearing in mind I have no idea what living in any of these places is like.

Are the jobs in each town much different/difficult to get?

I don't know where you're living currently, but I had a look at the populations for the towns as well. Crystal Brook is second largest at 1185 population as of 2007. Largest is Cleve at almost 2000. The others don't make it to 1000 (according to wikipedia).

If it was me, I'd go Crystal Brook, for a slightly larger population, and two hours away from Adelaide as opposed to two hours away from Whyalla.

Hope these ramblings are somewhat coherent, I just finished work and I may be tired.

I don't think being able to attend relevant car club events would even come up as a something to make a decision on when moving house..

Thanks bjk :D
At the moment, and all my life pretty much is living in city like situations.
All positions are with the same company, but they are asking for a lot moar experience in the other towns.
I guess I will wait and see what does or doesn't happen with the phone call tomorrow.

@ silverGPX....I enjoy club cruises and helping members with their cars, no it's not the most important aspect of my life but it is a part of it.

Well as the resident SA Country FTO member (only for another 2 weeks) and also probably the member with the most knowledge and hands-on experience of SA and the surrounds I will say my part.

As BJK said yea, they are a long way away from Adelaide, and that's 2 hours from the North of Adelaide (Feralsville) not the centre of Adelaide. So add another hour onto that time. Wundinna, Cleve, Cummins and Kimba don't have much really. Nothing like what you would have now by a long shot

Plus Whyalla has and always will be a mining town so there is a bit of infastructures, shops etc but nothing really for families.

However I don't mind Crystal Brooke for a small country town. Not much there but relaxing. My old man does a bit of work up there.

End of the day all those places ARE as mentioned a long way away from Adelaide. But you're more than welcome to come join us in SA ;)

Just had my phone interview and it went well.
I mentioned that I would realy only prefer to move to Crystal Brook.
She is going to speak with the CEO and see what can be worked out.
She is also going to get a tech to phone me to test out my skills/knowledge.
She is also going to phone my refrences.
Starting wage will be $60k working up to $75k + OT

So far going ok I suppose.

P.S. Thanks for all the feedback guys, it has been very helpful :D

Sounds amazing Phil! I wouldn't imagine it to be TOO difficult for you. Whyalla and Port Lincoln are developing at a rapid rate, with shops and department stores popping up too! Adelaide is only 2-3 hours away, so it's not TOO far should you want to do car stuff or do whatever we actually do in Adelaide... For money like that, it's definitely worth a shot!

It's not that hot really, only for like 2 weeks a year

I wouldn't remind Phil about it if I wasn't serious about paying up. But unfortunately I always pay my debts, as I expect others to pay me if they owe me.

BUT...

It's only a 700ml bottle!!!!
