The Electrics are coming

Post by Astron_Boy »

To be honest, I am a rather big fan of electric cars.
Whilst they won't save the planet..... umm, honestly... couldn't care, don't care if I offended you either.. hippy.

But they are a cool concept, the torque, the lack of overall moving parts, silent performance.
It does appeal.

If I had the cash, it would be in my garage right now.

It's always been in the back of my mind actually. Got a spare FTO sitting in the garage and it's been bloody tempting.

Firstly imagine the weight reduction from ripping out the radiator, air intake, fuel lines, engine, fuel tank and exhaust system.

I guess you'll be putting a little bit of that weight back on if you choose a battery pack with a range of 300-500km per charge. But you can choose to mount the battery pack either in the bonnet or take out the back seats and mount there for instant MR.

Take the Tesla electric motor which is only the size of a laptop. But the gearbox probably needs to definitely go and replaced with a single or two gear auto with a drag torque converter to be able to handle the torque. The Tesla motor has been tested at 0-100km/h in 3.7s and the new setup might be even lighter than the Tesla Roadster which is 1235kg. Either way would be a hell of a lot cheaper to do the conversion that actually buy a Tesla roadster..........if the local RTA would ever let you register it.......bit of a grey area there

I was researching electric drive for an FTO at one point.

Changed plans however.

If I were going down that path, I'd be looking into having electric drive to the rear wheels with petrol-power to the front. If set up correctly, imagine how much fun it'd be. :D :D :D :D :D
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

until then:
1. 2001 Merc-Benz A160 (porta-loo on wheels)
2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)
3. 2009 Mitsubishi Triton Di-D (a monster in its own right)
4. 1992 Nissan NX Coupe (club car and project car)
5. 1996 Holden SB Barina - "The Nugget"
6. 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport - The Budget Build
7. 2010 Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series - V8 Goodness... - Build coming soon.
8. 1990 Audi 90 manual - The delightfully dignified daily driver

But if you keep the setup of the 4-stroke combustion engine with the added weight of the electric motors and battery back......that's a lot of extra weight. It it worth it?

:D i was looking at the same thing once upon a time. But decided if it was going to do such a thing then there are far better cars to do it on.

I drove a Camry Hybrid once between syd and melb and the only thing i liked about it was the Mileage. The cons were: Two Gears, No engine noise
