Pumping fuel out
Hi guys,
I want to drain my fuel tank.
I've seen people disconnect some fuel line in the engine bay and turn the ignition so it pumps out.
Can anyone tell me what fuel line this is and what is the best place to disconnect it to drain the fuel?

Err.. that would be the fuel line that isn't the return line.. so the one at the front, from memory. There's only two.. Don't know if turning ignition on will keep pump on for long enough. Just use a couple of spare cables to hard wire the pump to a battery by hand temporarily.
I fix cars.

Re: Pumping fuel out
I'd pull the tank. Running the pump will only suck all the sh*t into the pump.

Re: Pumping fuel out
Thanks Daniel,
I wasn't sure if I should be getting the line somewhere where the fuel filter is in the engine bay or not.
Is there a way I can tell which is the return and which is the feed?
I assume you mean the lines that go into the fuel rail?
Also... anyone know what size fuel line I need to buy so that I can direct where the fuel goes?
@Bennoz, I had a look inside the tank from where the fuel sender is and it seems pretty clean. I really do not want to be taking off the tank

Re: Pumping fuel out
Wut...
Pull the fuel line off that goes into the fuel rail at the front and just angle the fuel line into a bucket or container. It is a soft line so you can angle it as needed. Maybe have to pull your intake out for space for your bucket or whatever.
Depending on the reason you are doing this I would also drop the tank (No I wouldn't because I'm lazy but +1 you should)
There is almost always sh*t and gunk at the bottom of fuel tanks. Might look clean but it won't be.

Or just punch a hole in the bottom of the tank and tape it back up.

Re: Pumping fuel out
The fuel in the car is 3 months old and the car won't be used for another few months so I wanted to drain the fuel (but use it in my daily driver).
I'm not sure what is involved in dropping the fuel tank (it's a Lancer coupe not an FTO) but one thing I know is I don't want to do this
What can accumulate in there? The car doesn't have many km (80-90K km on the chassis) and has always had premium fuel put into it.
And even if there are some deposits, isn't that what the fuel filter is for?

Re: Pumping fuel out
Yes, but it has to get through the small gauze filter(s) in your pump before it gets to your in-bay filter.spetz wrote:And even if there are some deposits, isn't that what the fuel filter is for?
Do with that information as you please. Personally I'm lazy..
If it were me I'd just siphon it out.

Use the drain plug on the bottom of the tank......wouldnt that be a simple solution?

Re: Pumping fuel out
If there was one.
The line from the tank to the motor connects to the rear fuel rail. The front rail has the regulator, which then goes to the return line.

Re: Pumping fuel out
Been thinking of doing this for a while now too. Anyone tried one of these?
I was thinking pop the cover up from under the back seat and then stick one of these things in there: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal-Ma ... SwCU1Yw-fN
Thoughts?

Re: Pumping fuel out
A Lancer and because this was an easier method for me seeing as there are no back seats + the fuel wasn't that old and I didn't want it going to waste
