There is no reason to adjust the clearances any different than factory spec.

The reason they still tap after adjustment is because the were not done properly with the correct procedure from manual.

I knew one guy before who attempted to adjust his by feel without feeler gauges, just by how much play the arm had. Failed miserably and I had to fix it afterwards.

Trying this without feeler gauges is asking for trouble.

Will flat feeler gauges be ok for the task or do I need the 90 degree ones? As I only have flat ones.

Also perhaps the motor is not meant to be dead silent.
I mean, if you leave too little or no clearance the engine may silent but that would be due to valves not completely seating and hence allowing some of the combustion out as well

Injector pulsing is often misconstrued as tappet noise

Hey guys,

So I adjusted my tappets but wondering whether I tightened them too much.

I adjusted them to spec (intake and exhaust) then tried putting a 0.01mm thicker feeler gauge and it wouldn't go in, then tried inserting a 0.01mm thinner feeler gauge and that went in with a little resistance.

I am not sure if I have potentially adjusted them to 0.01mm less than spec?
Listening to the motor I can only hear ticking from the injectors, the heads are pretty quiet.
And my idle stays around 1,000rpm however the battery is always disconnected so I am not sure if it is just learning to idle each time (I've left the battery connected tonight to test this).

If I did set the clearances by 0.01mm less than factory spec would this cause problems?

Any idea why the idle remains at 1,000?
Also when I press the throttle and let go the revs don't drop as fast as I would expect.

Not sure if it is leaning out (fuel pressure is 42psi)?
Checked for vacuum leaks and it looks fine.
