What size are the bolts youre using? About 110mm in length?
Don't know and it will depend on your stand anyway, so measure em
True. I measured it this arvo its about 100mm in total needed. So I should be using about 110mm, correct?
Measure it and figure it out.
The through bolts will need to be long enough to go through the engine stand mounts and the side of the block with enough thread on the other side to fully tighten the nut including any washers.
The bolts that thread into the block should be long enough so they almost seat in their threads. Screw a bolt in until it seats and measure it.

After learning all about flywheels and how they look when they dont exist on an engine, I got the engine up on the stand this arvo. Found a couple of bolts pop had in the garage (4 out of about 60 years worth of collecting, a few thousand ish in total.. good old pop!) that fit perfectly. The crane and engine stand didnt seem to fit together (couldnt get the engine close enough to stand stand while on the crane to bolt it up initially) so it took a little bit of innovation to get on the stand from the crane with some help from my brother. Its now sitting nicely. Next up is a big all round clean so I can see what's what, then Im going to open it up and learn how to adjust tappets (so I can do it on my car! ) then give the sump (shut up ) a good clean so theres no oil and gunk leaking everywhere like there is now. After that, Im not really sure where to begin. I would assume top to bottom? Any suggestions?
tl;dr - c**nts on the fuckin' stand now.

You are always in too much of a rush, slow down a bit and think about what your going to do.
Write a plan for the day with the help of the workshop manual, then you have something to follow-check off.

Again follow the workshop manual, it will start at the top.

Haha I know, I think im a little too eager. But having said that, at least this is going to be fun, and probably hilarious for you guys to follow because of all the facepalming and f**k ups, as Shane suggested.
But there are washers in there, honest!
