Sams Phase 2: Forging Engine

Post by FtoSam »

Righto, Well i made this thread because my Turbo setup thread is basically finished.. I mean... my car is turbo'd..
So onto the next Phase.
Aim:
To create an engine that will produce 180-200kw atw and be almost indestructable at that power level (bulletproof).

Method:
The method I've settled on is basically to buy a new engine so as i can still drive the car. I've also settled on buying a 6a12 Non-MIVEC, Due to the MIVEC models having Oil starvation issues with the bottom end. Also the Non-Mivec being a bit easier to tune.
Once the engine has been purchased it will be sent to my Step-Dads place where he is blueprinting (Removing all cast marks, etc in order to eliminate areas for cracks to form). Once he is finished this part, It will be sent up to APC in QLD for the rest of the work to commence. Mainly Forged Pistons and rods, Shot-peened Crank, Solid Rings, Bơred/Sleeved Block. Then EVERYTHING will be balanced. Also anything else that needs to be done at the same time. Then as they put the new engine in, the new clutch will go in too.

Need:
GR Engine / Halfcut
Forged Custom Pistons (9:1 Comp) + Solid Rings
Forged Rods
Shot-Peened Crank
New Bearings etc.

Budget:
Engine: $1000
Everything done by APC: $5,000

Time Frame:
2 Weeks: Getting engine to Taree for blueprinting
2 Weeks: Blue Printing
2 Weeks: APC putting in Forgies/Boring/Balancing

Progress so far:
Engine has been found and deposit paid. Waiting on Max (Step-dad) to go pick it up.
Have talked to APC and they have assured me they can get the results i require for my budget.

$5k sounds pretty cheap for all the parts you listed with APC. Any reason why?

LSD buddy, LSD is what you need for the first step of transfer those power to the road. And maybe anti-lift kit next :D

Richard B from W.A had customed a EVO LSD for his FTO, all the info are at his website. Should check it out.

LSD will come one day... but while i need a new engine, i figure im going all out...
Progress:
Halfcut has been picked up and stripped down.
Have just finished talking to RPW about their frank motor. But soon realised it was built for N/A.
They did however say if i sent my engine over there, for $5k they would:
RPW says:
approx around $5000.00 to build a long motor with forge dinternals, turbo camshafts,
RPW says:
thats forged pistons decompressed, rods, camshafts, valve springs, camshaft gears, head gasket, ARP main and head stud kit
RPW says:
forged pistons and rods, arp bolts, head gasket stock metal type, vernier camshaft gears and turbo spec camshafts.
RPW says:
we have built several of these with great results
RPW says:
no need to touch the crank
RPW says:
crank would be strong enough yes you are looking large dollars to shot peen and modify cranks and rarelye ever necessary
Sam says:
righto... as long as it can stand the 200+ kw i want to get out of it

RPW says:
no reason why not Mitsubish have always had good cranks
RPW says:
I run 400kw on a V6 Magna stock crankshaft
RPW says:
fright to nSW and back again would easily be covered for around $500.00
RPW says:
we would need it for around 6 - 8 weeks to be honest, as some parts will still need to be fabricated
RPW says:
we have already made these pistons and rods before and camshafts so these are items off the shelf so to speak

Thats part of my conversation with them over MSN...
Is there any other questions i should be asking? Would this be better than getting a local engine builder to charge me $2k more to do it? Even though no-one has touched a fto engine before except RPW??
By the looks of things this looks like a lot better work than i was currently planning (just bottom end)
What do you think about me taking this route?

An engine is an engine mate. Any good engine shop can build an engine whether it be for a forklift of a V8 supercar. Only thing you might want from WA is the cams.

SAM STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

one of the twin turbo uk owners told me that the engine part number for the 6a12 is the same as the 6a12 in the galant... and the americans sell forged pistons for the galant 6a12

Interestingly the 6A12 Twin Turbo uses the same rods, crank etc.. as the FTO... which got me thinking. The only difference is the head gasket and the pistons. Which combined obviously lower the compression.

Forged pistons are dirt cheap in America ($600 a set USD)
http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/TUSM6A12.htm

You can pick up a turbo kit ($2895 USD)
http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/TUSMG2501E.htm

Rods ($999)
http://www.importperformanceparts.net/i ... -rods.html

err... so what else do we need, head gasket....

could be worth a couple of grand for someone to experiment.

will that seriously work??? Galant Pistons and rods??
Can anyone else verify this?
What are the FTO part numbers for Rods/Pistons/Crank/etc??
Would this mean i could get some 6a12tt rods/pistons to whack in? whats the likely hood of 2nd hand ones doing the job? or just get new ones??

Loving the info Jono... thanks a million...

Righto..
Here's a list that max asked me to ask RPW.
Because max can get the engine there for cheap through one of his transport buddies, we're thinkin send the engine over for them to do the work.
Questions:

1- The engine will be blueprinted? (so far i think yes)
2- The block has to be decked.
3- Pistons, Flywheel and crank all have to be balanced
4- The bores need to be checked and rebored or honed if neccesary
5- Then pistons made to suit
6- What do they need sent over? (sump, TB, Intake, Injectors, etc)
7- Need the intake manifold match ported.
8- Heads need to be polished and ported.
9- Need a concrete price on everything.
Is there any other questions i should be asking??
