Datalogging - from car to laptop

Post by Shahrez »

Hey guys, was browsing through the Mitsubishi Forum of WA and saw this, it was a year ago since this guy posted this, but i rekon its pretty interesting and i might be up trying to get them.
HoBo wrote:Just wondering how many of you guys have heard of datalogging your vehicle? With a datalogger you can display pretty much any of the info the sensors in the car pick up and transmit to the ECU. The protocol for datalogging in mitsubishi's (and other manufactures) did change to another protocol for 1996+ vehicles. If you look under the dash near your fuse box you will see that there is a diagnostic port. You need a datalogging cable and then some kind of computer interface & software to out put the info too.

I have been using a data logger in my car for some time now, seeing as how my car is a 1993 i use the pre 1996 style logger cable and a Palm Vx to output it to, though you could use a laptop if you wish. Here is an example of the things i log on my ECU:
Accel Enrichment
Coolant Temp
Engine RPM
Fuel Trim High
Fuel Trim Low
Fuel Trim Middle
Injector Pulse Width
Oxygen Feedback Trim
Oxygen Sensor
Throttle Position
Air Flow Hz
Air Temperature
Air Volume
Barometer
ISC Steps
Knock some (Really good for turbo cars)
Timing Advance
Battery
EGR Temperature
TDC
and more!

I think its a useful tool for any performance enthusiast out there who's car is used in a race style application. You can log the information and it will also out put it to a graph so you can see for example at what RPM how much load your injectors were under.

This will also tell you what sensor has detected a problem when your CEL comes on, this makes finding the problem very simple.

If you guys are keen to know more ask away seeing as how i thought some of you might find this quite usefull.

Here is an example of some software displaying data for a 1996+ car in one of its many interfaces:

1996+

$110

So if your FTO is a 1995 model or lower, then u need OBD1, otherwise u need OBD2. OBD 2 is more expensive, and u can actually buy them of ebay but iam not sure where the damn connecting port is in the car. Possibly under the steering wheel?

Id be guessing the connections that vary between the models hence the reason for the different plugs

This has been tried with little success, yes its OBDII cabling (with plug under the steering column, but its not OBDII protocol, Its Mitsubishi's hybrid MUT-II

The poms have a 7 page thread on it with little success.

NB: You'll need to login to the pommy site to see it.

x2

"Supports ALL 1994+ Mitsubishi Vehicles. (Uses the fast mitsubishi dealer MUT-III protocol for datalogging)
ALL Mitsubishi Vehicles with an OBDII connector, all mitsubishis from 1994 onwards have one of these!
"

You can tune with one of them to... if you own an evo.. "sigh"
