Supercharger project starting

Hi, im a member of the UK ftooc and thought I'd post up here too as you guys have a lot more experience when it comes to FTO's and forced induction than the UK boys.

After following Rob Furniss's supercharger project from start to finish I thought I'd have a go myself.

So far I have got -

Have 99% of the bits needed including full emanage setup - emanage blue, ignition harness, injector harness, 3 bar map sensor and harness, support tool and data cable, Eaton M45 supercharger off a mercedes, spare plenum to mod, some 3" X 3" aluminium box section, spare throttle body to help mock it up.

Im fitting the emanage tomorrow afternoon then probably next week will start doing some fab work on the custom plenum. Going for something like this hopefully (ftom a GTO project)-

Things left to buy -

Some aluminium plate to fab the plenum,
Idler and tensioner pulleys
Custom double alternator pulley to drive the supercharger
Supercharger bypass valve to part throttle/idle

Will be running 5 PSI boost and this is a tight budget project what are your views on -

1) bigger injectors - essential or can I run standard 166's as long as I dont go over the 5 PSI boost.

2) Fuel pump - standard or bigger pump essential?

Awesome mate, looking forward to watching this project.

1) If your sticking with 5psi ONLY then definitly DONT change the injectors.
2) I would upgrade your fuel pump, you dont have to, I am running stock pump on 5psi but it is totally maxed out, so for some cheap insurance do yourself a favour and get one.

Nice project mate. Looks the goods. I agree totally with looking into to upgrading your fuel pump first rather than your injectors. If your pump max's out, then upgrading your injectors will do nothing. However in upgrading your pump you're able to get the maximum potential out of your standard injectors. Keep us updated.

supercharger just got delivered, in great conditon too.

Posted up some pics of it compared to rear part of the plenum so you can see the size comparison - pretty much the same size so should squeeze it in as I originally planned (hopefully :) )

Just checked the supercharger for the correct rotational direction and its clockwise as you look at the pulley -

You need to be aware of the flow these blowers put out, just fitting it there cause it fits won't give you optimum results. I suggest you have a read of this:

I got very close to doing it but ended up with a bottle of nos & a 6A13 instead

Full emanange setup from ebay - £130
supercharger - £127
Plenum - £33.20 (will get that back when I sell my original one)
3" X 3" alluminium box section £12

plenum and box section now cut to size, just have to drill 6 holes and plate the end sections -

going to be ordering up the easyweld stuff monday so that should be fun as ive never welded anything before :)

Emanage now fully installed and working inc. main harness, injector harness and ignition harness :D

the vid of the supercharged fto in the uk was crazy :twisted:

Ordered up a new Bosch supercharger bypass valve. Had it for a great price too from ebay, £18 delivered from the US. They normally retail for $80 + $25 shipping. The guy must have a few as he's sold 3 or 4 over last couple of weeks if anyone else needs one.

some aluminium sheet to complete plenum

been toying with some mounting ideas too, came up with this idea which would also simplify the plenum design (would just be the 3" box section with an inlet pipe).

excuse my amazing paint skills (also borrowed the pic from rob's project (hope you dont mind) :lol:

orange circles are idler and tensioner pulleys.
Red line is an alluminium plate to which the supercharger would be mounted upside down with the outlet blowing upwards.

potential problems -

would the mounting plate be strong enough to stand the forces placed on it? The up plate is bolted to the rear of the engine where the plenum support bracket bolts into on the standard setup. the red plate would then be welded on to it.

If it could be done what thickness plate would be recommended?

Hoping to get this mounting plate all sorted by next weekend hopefully.

Things moving along quite quickly.

Now ordered up some 10mm aluminum plate + I have sorted out my double alternator pulley which will be payed for on friday :D

So next step will be fitting the new pulley and starting to strip my car and bolt on/test fit new parts. Suppose this is where it all starts to get tricky.

Budget so far -

Supercharger - £127
Supercharger bypass valve - £18
Plenum - £33.20
emanage - £130
Ally box section - £12
Ally supercharger base plate - £14.40

Total costs so far = £334.60

(will get around £30 back for my original plenum when completed)

Things to pay for -

Bigger fuel pump - £90 ish
Custom alt pulley - £96
Supercharger belt - £?
Some more ally plate £?

So far budget is looking quite good

Dude im a little confused (no surprise really lol). Your gonna have the super charger sitting to top of the rear bank??????

yes, thats why you have to make the cut down custom manifold to make room for it. Rob Furniss has his set up in a similar way

upper half of the mounting plate is done and ive cut out the holes from the box section ready to weld on to the cut down plenum section.

Easyweld has been ordered up and should be here tomorrow and I missed the delivery of my bypass valve today so will be collecting it tomorrow.

Bypass valve arrived today, had a play around with it and think ive got it sussed out, the nipple on top seems to open the internal valve to allow the flow back into the supercharger intake.

p.s. sussed it out by giving a good hard suck on the nipple :lol:
