Little white plastic lugs in steering column

For the want of a better topic name, that's it.

So I had a wheel alignment done and the next day, the steering column has converted to a multi-axis helicopter control stick that I can move in any direction. Back to Bob Jane and when I pick it up again, they tell me that there are four little plastic lugs that fit into a plate on the steering column (I have one of the broken lugs that I can photograph and put online if that helps) that stop it moving from side to side. They're broken. To fix it, they've gone and used pop rivets. So my questions are:

Can anyone shed any light on these curious little bits of plastic?
Should I really be tracking down spare parts and getting it fixed properly?

yes you should as this is what makes the car go in a straight line. Never compromise on something like the steering. I should have plenty of them lying around if you want a set.

Oh and what's involved with fitting them? Is it a fairly easy process or is this going to be something I'm better off getting a mechanic to install?

The bit I was thinking of is actually metal. There are 2 little lugs that hold the wheel still and allow the adjustments to occur. Ill definitely have what you are after but will need to identify which bit that is.

Do you mean the little bits between wheel and coloum or boss kit? they allow you to set indicator correctly so switches them off automatically.

To be honest, I don't know exactly where they came from. The bloke at Bob Jane just said there was a plate and four of these things sat into it, countersunk, and that stopped any sideways movement of the steering column. Here's some super close-up images of the broken part. I have no idea of their orientation and each piece is about 3mm long.
