TV no longer detects PC through HDMI

Post by AJ »

My PC has been working for 2 years through a HDMI cable to my TV. Recently it started playing up. When I switched the PC and TV on, the TV would say "No signal" so I eventually found a work around where I'd plug the HDMI cable into another HDMI input on the TV. When I did this I'd hear a 2 tone sound from the speakers, change the source on the TV to match the now connected HDMI input and the PC would be displayed. Now that doesn't even work.

I've googled heaps and installed the latest drivers but still can't get it to work. I've tried replacing the HDMI cable but that didn't do anything. It's defiently something to do with Vista (64) not recognising the TV I'm sure.

Why would this happen, and how can I fix it?

Thanks!

Have you tried detecting the tv in the nvidia control panel?
If it doesnt then possibly your rooting your HDMI ports on the tv.
Have you tried detecting it in device manager?
Cant think of much more at this time lmao 16 hour work days = fun

Sounds like your cable is screwy.
Or
Your connections are oxidizing.
Pull the cable in and out a few times to scrub off the layer of oxide from the contacts, then it should work.
Alternatively jiggle the cable, trying to keep the connections steady, that will show any issues with that.

Can get you a good quality replacement cable either way for cheap if you need.

He has already replaced the cable
Unless its his ports i would say its a detecting issue like he said, if nothing comes up in nvidia or device manager then f**k i dunno i have to be there to think about this kinda crap lol

So If both HDMI ports aren't working and you've changed the cable, it might be the internal connection to the ports of either the PC or the TV.

You mentioned your Vista64 - was that recently installed? Thought of trying Windows 7?

Inferior cable though.
Some of the cheaper HDMI cables, much like any cheaply made cable, can develop the oxidized layer over the contacts.

I have seen a few come through my place of business, not our product, but samples and other customers.
All of which simply needed a light rub of some alcohol or contact cleaner and then lube to ensure it doesnt happen again.

When you say you have tried replacing the cable AJ, have you had the signal working again, but then it causes the same issues/ show the same symptoms?
Or is it a case of, no signal, change cable for new, still no signal?

Edit: Also, if you plug any other hdmi device in to the TV ports, are you getting a signal then? Gives some indication if it's TV issue or PC out issue.

I reckon your video card is fuxxed.

You can buy brand new 1Gig PCIe cards with HDMI outputs for less than $40 these days.
Last one I bought was from PC DIY in the clock tower complex on Parramatta Rd at Auburn & it was about $35 bucks.

agree, plug in another device that uses a hdmi cable into your TV (dvd player, xbox, PS3). If it doesn't get a signal I would try resetting the TV back to factory settings and see if that helps. If it does work you should try plugging your pc into another tv if you have one. If you upgraded to Vista 64-bit you should make sure you have updated your graphics card drivers too.

I've not adjusted it so should be fine.

Well, I have AMD Vision Engine Control Centre. It detects my TV, but I'm using a VGA cable at the moment as I can't see anything with the HDMI.
What am I looking for in Device Manager?

Connections appear to be nice and clean.

Vista is as old as the PC, about 2 years.

I took the cable from my PS3 and plugged it in while the computer was on. I tried all 3 HDMI ports in the TV, none detected the PC. PS3 works fine with that cable. Will try the PC cable on the PS3 and report back.
I could try plugging the PS3 into the PC TV. Will try and then report back.

Last resort. Cheers for the tip

Will try that. Vista 64 is all this computer has ever run. I updated the drivers to the graphics card but it doesn't seem to have done anything.

Cheers all.

Your checking too see if in device manager the monitor (tv) is listed, and then check to see that it says the device is working properly, if not you could try and manually detect it.
This of course is under the assumption that the cable and hdmi ports and the pc and pc hdmi ports are fine, and its a simple matter of the tv not responding to the pc for some reason.

I took my PC TV to the lounge and plugged the PS3 into the back of it. TV showed the PS3.
I tuned the PS3 off, put my PC HDMI cable in the PS3 and the TV, turned the PS3 on and the TV showed it, so it's not the wire.

I took the PC TV back to the PC, plugged the PC HDMI cable in to the PC, which was on, plugged it into the TV and got the two tone sound (like when you plug an external device in). PC is now running on TV through original HDMI cable. FARRRRKKKKKKK!

Dare I turn everything off and on again to see if it's still working???? Lol.
