Tipronic FTO.

Post by iPilot »

So a question in regards to the tiptronic gearbox in the gpx fto ive recently purchased. The 5 speed in auto mode seems to be skipping gears. Does that indicate that the gearbox is gonna completely stuff up on me?

*manual conversion?* 8O
Its either an FTO or nothing!

Care to elaborate.
'skipping gears'
How?

Did it just start doing this?
Was it doing it when you test drove it.

Ahh yes, why do I always forget that. lol (probably cause I have barely driven an FTO in ages)

1) Disconnet battery for 15 mins then reconnect.
2) car will take a week to adjust to your driving habits.
3) car will drive and shift how you want it to without question (it learnt how you drive)
4) profit.

Welcome to the world of invecs.

It was doing it when I test drove it.
Ill give you guys some more specific details tomorrow after I've taken her for another spin.
From what I recall the problem was if I was going 50kph it said it was in 4th gear then dropped back down to 3rd.
However I'm not 100% sure as to if thats exactly whats happening.
Will have some more info tomorrow.
You guys suggest disconnecting the battery for 15mins and see how we go from there?

The car is used to someone else driving it.

As said, reset the computer (disconnect battery for 15 mins)
Then give it a week.
You will not like the gearbox for a week, but afterward it will drive like you want.

Its actually alright, its not doing the problem that i thought it was.
Its just changing gears really fast - i mean its in 5th gear at 60kph.
Is that meant to be doing that or whats the dealio?
I havnt reset the battery yet koz my mums gonna be driving the car quite abit & i dont want it adapting to her driviing style hahaha!

60 in 5th is normal.

The gearbox will continue to adapt regardless of who's driving, but the time it takes to adapt to the new driver is roughly a week I found.
That's comparing my wifes driving style to mine.

Resetting things by the battery is simply a reboot and to completely clear the tcu.

In the end, if your mum drives it long enough, when you go back, it will act the way that suited her.
You can either reset and wait it out, or drive it and wait it out...

It's not as bad as it sounds, but if you're used to the gear changes a certain way, then it makes a slight difference.

Also to save this question for later as it always comes up.
Shifting the car to tip tronic mode over-rides the gearboxes pre-programmed shift points, in other words, unless you shift, it won't. *except when coming to a complete stop, it will go back to 1st*

Well, just don't hold it at redline all the time and drive in 1 gear just to hear mivec...

if you want it to shift through the gears quicker, then shift, if you want to hold the gear longer, then wait. same as driving a manual.

However the car cannot shift to 5th gear at 20kph, it still has a minimum req speed per gear.
I know 5th gear needs atleast 55kph.

When driving normally just shift between 2-3 maybe 4k when going up hills but even then the FTO pulls hard at 4k

Eventually you will shift gears by the sound of the engine.

I can already do that in a manual car, it just seems very different in the fto due to it sounding like its over revving all the time.

You have a 2.0L V6 in a car that weighs 1100kg, and have 8800rpm to play with. Come back and complain when you've got a 2.5 4cyl in a car that weighs double that, and only 4500rpm
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

until then:
1. 2001 Merc-Benz A160 (porta-loo on wheels)
2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)
3. 2009 Mitsubishi Triton Di-D (a monster in its own right)
4. 1992 Nissan NX Coupe (club car and project car)
5. 1996 Holden SB Barina - "The Nugget"
6. 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport - The Budget Build
7. 2010 Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series - V8 Goodness... - Build coming soon.
8. 1990 Audi 90 manual - The delightfully dignified daily driver

It isnt skipping gears its simply auto changing. Mine does the same. Theres no problem with it. As was mentioned before, there is minimum speed thresholds for certain gears. I have a 4 speed and it wont shift into 4th until its at least about 45km/h. If in 4th and I drop below the 45 ish km/h it drops down to 3rd. No need to worry about it!
I fix cars.

I never drive mine in D. Always use TIP. If you're going hard, change about 500 rpm before you think you need to and you won't hit the limiter.

Man the only reason people think the FTO shifts funny is the gear indicator on the dash. Mosts cars shift like this but you don't notice it as there is no indicator.

You can even get it to go from top gear to first. The auto will drop done a gear when slowing down and then to first or whatever.
