Smoke from exhaust and engine bay

Post by bobby_g »

Over the last few weeks i've noticed smoke from my exhaust mainly when i'm pulled up (at traffic lights etc) in drive with my foot on the brake, it also happens in nuetral etc. Mechanic thinks its my valve stem seals. Recently i opened the bonnet straight after driving and noticed smoke coming from the engine bay, it seemed to be coming up from below around where the coolant tap is. It smokes everytime i drive it now. My car is 1995 automatic non-mivec V6. Any ideas what it could be? I wouldve thought if it was the valve stem seals that you wouldnt have smoke coming out of engine bay or that the smoke would go away after warmed up?? Any help is appreciated.

Car isnt overheating at all. Temp guage doesnt go past half way. It definately smells like smoke. I'm guessing oils leaking onto something hot as it doesnt smoke until its been driven

Is there anything that can cause smoke from engine bay and exhaust?

Its too dark to get photos at the moment. It seems to be coming up from somewhere below where you fill up the coolant....and i meant is there anything that can cause both smoke in engine bay and from exhaust...or have i just got unlucky and have two problems?

Crack in the coolant reservoir/hose(s)?

Have your coolant levels been dropping? Although that wouldnt really explain it coming from the exhaust. Worth a look, know a bloke with a Ghia that had the same issue with steam coming from a cracked coolant reservoir.

Oil leak onto the exhaust manifold will do it. Also, if one of your driveshaft boots has split and spat grease onto the exhaust manifold, that will cause a burning smell + smoke.

Ahk, if its not coolant, then yeah as said, sounds like an oil leakage.

I reckon a smaller coolant hose leading to your throttle body. Smoke while idling is steam from the cold weather.
