New member- Questions :)

Post by Dylan »

Hey guys!
I am really in love with the FTO looks and am not afraid of the maintenance requirements ;) and am thus thinking of buying one.
However I have some questions.

1) Insurance seems to be a bitch. For a 17 year old doubly so. Is there any 3rd party, fire and theft that is available for around $1000 cause otherwise this will break my bank. Live in crescent head btw (near Kempsey, Port Maquarie).

2) What would you guys estimate to be the yearly maintenance costs for a 96 GPX?

3) Can you give me an overview feel of this:
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/deta ... rt=default

4) Due to it needing the 100xxx km service soon what would I have to change and how much would this cost.

Can't think of any others right now :P but if you guys could please answer these for now that would be great :)

Thanks for your time guys.

First thing WTTC :D .
Now for your questions:
Yes Insurance will be high for a 17 - 20 year old and then some, your best bet would do some on line quotes. May be try just car insurance.
2. We can't put a price on yearly costs for a 96 as each car is different.
A 100'000K service could set you back $1000+ if you go to a mechanic.

1) Try Just cars insurance. - If not there is a HUGE insurance thread somewhere, quick search will find it.

2) That depends on a lot of things like how often you drive, how far you drive and how you drive.

3) Hard to tell from pics and description but seems o.k. i guess No rust in the roof is always a good plus.

4) Timing belt + water pump. Normally parts + labour come up to around $1k (roughly same for every car).

Welcome and enjoy.

WTTC Dylan :D
Car looks cool 8)
Just check that there is no roof rust, look for little raised bubble shapes in the roof paint just behind windscreen and before rear window.
I have 3rd party/fire/theft insurance with NRMA.

BTW, Who in their right mind would put "Eye turning custom decals" on a FTO ;)

 ikr? still, its near where i live aka not 6+ hours away :P and looks a treat imho.

Worth hiring a mechanic to drive to when I am test driving it to inspect it?
And also, undersealing. I have read that it is important on some posts and some where they say its not that important. Thoughts?

:)

YES. Unless you are very competent and know what youre doing with cars. Even then, always good to get a qualified second opinion.
I fix cars.

Welcome to the club, Dylan!

I'd basically say the same as everybody else has already...

I like your potential FTO! Looks veeery pretty! Like they said, just look for little bubbles on the roof as mine's really bad and it's going to cost a shitload to fix

Best of luck to you!

Can't you get a NRMA pre-purchase inspection done?
I would also STRONGLY suggest a REVS check :!: If they tell you it was a repairable write-off, walk away from the purchase.

My 1995 FTO has done 220K Km's
REVS (PPRS) check lets you know if there is money owing, if it was a write off, if it has been stolen, if VIN and engine numbers are correct, etc
REVS (no longer Fair Trading) please contact Personal Property Services 1300 007 777
https://transact.ppsr.gov.au/ppsr/Searc ... e?v=Search

Used to be a free check, now they want $3.70

best bet for insurance (if you only want 3rd party, fire and theft), is to put it in your parents' name, and see if they can tag it onto their existing policy.

Most insurers are much more picky with the make and model, and driver age etc when it comes to full comp.

There's potential for a thread about anything on FTO Australia
