FTO AUSTRALIA

I'm looking at getting a car which might have an exhaust/HIDs that may fail a roadworthy. Does anyone know any lenient places in Canberra?

I cant give you any pointers im afraid. Im one of the only Canberra members (well, suedo Canberra - I work there). I used to get Total Traction to service the car (Belconnen). they did quite a few members FTO's. Dont think they do roadworthies though. Worst case, get the test done and see what they pick up. Ive got stock lights on the shelf we can temporarily swap in if need be. Might be able to dig out a stock exhaust as well If I had to.

Mate I dont think the gear shifter had a "H" pattern on it either just so you know. You can get away with a little sticker on the console below it.

Does the car actually have to have a picture of the gears?...

Yeah it either has to be on the gear knob or visible somewhere.

I doubt you'll find a lenient mechanic though. Doing roadworthy checks is a large part of their profit (and it's easy to do) so they won't risk losing their license.

I took my car to some guy in Fyshwick which seemed dodgy but even he wouldn't pass me on a couple of minor issues

What were your minor issues?

So I could just put a sticky note with the gears picture drawn in pen next to the shifter and it would pass that bit...?

Yep, that's what most of the S15 Sylvia's have from factory, and it's perfectly legal.

It wasn't for an FTO, but the front seat had a bit of a tear in it and he failed that. Also swaybar bushes were shot supposedly.

Not sure if the post-it note would work. Just get something like this:

How does upholstery have anything to do with the safety and working order of the car?

Ive never had trouble with those sort of things. Rather than worrying about what might fail, you are much better off just putting it through and seeing what they pick you up on. Otherwise you are going to be told about every nightmare that a club member has had and youll be chasing shadows for days......

No the upholstery thing is serious...
And normally I'd understand if there was metal showing etc, but there was none, it was just a bit of a rip from wear and tear with no sharp edges exposed.

But as dstocks mentioned, unless you're confident the car will pass besides these minor issues, you may as well get it through so you know what you need to fix

My old seat that was in my FTO had a couple of tears in it, I just put on cheap seat covers and it passed fine.
I don't have any gear selection label, I never had one in my previous car either. So thats six years of passing pink slip without one.
I have a loud exhuast too, still it passes.
Plenty of mates cars pass with HID's and they don't even have projector head lights.

I agree with dstocks, put it in for inspection and let them find any issues. Then just fix those and get it passed.

Alright, I was just trying to find out the best place to start off with. I'm sure there could be a mile of difference depending on where I go (definitely if it's the same as NSW).

Several years ago a large number of mechanics got busted here in Canberra for passing cars that should have been rejected and some massive fines were handed out, one guy that passed my FTO didn't even see my car. He did a whole bunch of other cars without even seeing them either and got bust and lost his business and if I remember correctly I think he actual got a jail sentence to boot. They cracked down on it hard here so I doubt you would find anyone willing to be lenient here in Canberra.

Yea but theres a difference between a small sticker that takes 2 seconds to remove literally, and that a lot of cars today dont have and shotty tyres etc
