Evo 7 Airbag/wheel Swap over

Post by Technikhaus »

I think I've mentioned this here before, but I can't remember where.
I have been looking around and I really like the wheel in the Evo 7.
If you don't know of the wheel I'm talking of

My current wheel:

Now what I'm wanting is to figure out if they are able to be swapped.....

My main concern would be the airbag, from images that I have seen they seem reasonably alike. but I would like to try and confirm this.

This is my current airbag unit:

This is the airbag unit for the EVO:

Does anybody have any information that may help me figure out if it would fit?

Best be talking to someone who knows all about this rather than gather ideas of the internet before you go buy a $500+ wheel mate
Might also want to check legalities of fiddling with airbags too.

That's why I've posted here and an evo forum, i want to know if I will fit first :P
From my research in NZ, I can replace the wheel, as long as the new one has an airbag as well.
If I want to remove the airbag all together I have to get the car certified.

Haha, f**k screwing with airbags.

Imagine if it deployed wrong! You could have a serious injury!

That's the reason I want to see if they are the same/similar enough to be safe.

It will be the same if it wad deployed in a crash. Must be talking about it accidently going off when changing it over... Which you shoukdnt be in front of it anyway. You'll bwright if ir will fit.

Thanks for that, after a quick google, the evo wheels up to evo 6.5 fit, but for the 7/8...
the evo7 and newer, require you get the spline from the evo7 steering column

Columns aren't that hard to fit...
BUT then the question is, Will the evo 7/8 column fit onto the FTO steering rack?

From more googling, those columns fit in the Legnums of our ages etc.
Another option, mentioned here:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/article ... l-dsm.html
Is to cut and weld the two wheels together, to give the evo 7/8/9 wheels our mounts from the current wheel.
I still have not found and confirmation if the airbag would still work though...

just read the rest of the thread, and there is a lot of info, one of the guys wired in his airbag, but of course no confirmation if it will work...
