Rebuild time!
Ok so the time has come to rebuild the engine that I have.. MIVEC 6A12..
I have been quoted about $1500 for all the outsourced block and head work.
What else am I going to need exactly?
So far I need, obviously, all gaskets and seals, plus belts and general service stuff like sparks and oil and such.
Timing belt kit - $134 Camskill
All gaskets and seals - $85 fleabay OR Camskill $248 (difference?)
Oil/sparks/coolant etc. - Around $200 through work
Piston rings - $208 Camskill (I'm just cleaning up the old pistons as long as the cylinders dont have to be bored out)
Spark plug seals - $112 Camskill
What else is going to be needed? (Please pardon me if I've missed something obvious )
Also - does the MIVEC and non mivec share the same engine mounts?
Cheers

Mounts should be the same for mivec/non mivec. Auto/manual are different though

Re: Rebuild time!
Didn't see you mention all the bearings (rod, main, thrust).
These come in different sizes so you may need to order them later down the track after your crank etc has been measured and you check the stamp inside the block

Re: Rebuild time!
I think Mitsubishi has different thickness bearings though which you need to get the right parts for.
Did everything work out when you took the old ones to the shop?
Anyone know whether it's better to go for ACL race bearings or OEM Mitsubishi?
I've read that Honda people generally prefer OEM over ACL

Did you take the crank in with the bearings to get measured?
Did you do the rebuild yourself?

Re: Rebuild time!
The bearings will be different for every single engine. You need to get the crank mic'ed, linished, then measured. Then you'll know if you need +5 thou, +10 thou, +20 thou etc.Daniel2019 wrote:Is there a kit for all the bearings? Cant find it through camskill.

Re: Rebuild time!
Ok so now that the silver fto is gone its time to get cracking on this.
So far, my parts list consists of:
Timing belt kit and water pump
All gaskets and seals
Piston rings
Rod, main, thrust bearings
Standard stuff i.e. Oil/sparks/coolant/leads etc.
What else am I missing?
What should I be asking the shop to do in terms of head and block work (should I be getting them to do any work on valve stems or something?)
Should I get a port and polish done? If so, on what exactly?
Sorry for n00bness, I'm just trying to make sure I get it right the first time

Re: Rebuild time!
This looks interesting........are you blueprinting your engine?
I know this might be a sh*tty addition to the budget but while you have it open perhaps you can drop in some forged components? And maybe stronger heavy duty seals?
This will give you the option in future to turbo without having to worry too much about internals

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Re: Rebuild time!
For that kind of coin I would be doing a 6A13 conversion.Nacho wrote:This looks interesting........are you blueprinting your engine?

Basic answer is no and no. I'm going to be keeping this internally stock (aside from a port and polish if I have the money) because if I was going to start spending hefty amounts of money on mods I may as well just do a 6A13 conversion and gain twice the power.
