The guy you bought it off, you do have all his details yes? And did you ask him for his purchase receipt from the previous owner? If he was legit, he would have the rego/notice of disposal/transfer paperwork from who he bought it off, even if he didn't get around to completing the transfer.

You can't re- register the car even when the rego expires i think. You will still need proof of ownership. Do a complete revs check to find the history and also contact police. If i were you, i would go back to the seller, hand over the car and ask for my money back.
