Best radiator width

Post by bjk »

I don't know for certain yet, but to be pre-emptive on research, what is the best mm width for the radiator? Dwayne suggested I have a look on ebay, and we found a couple, but they seem to differ on the core size.

35mm http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RADIATOR-MIT ... 695wt_1037

42mm http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/42mm-2-core- ... a37&_uhb=1

Anyone know what the stock size is, or have bought a new radiator recently?

Cheers for any suggestions.

Bigger is normally better when it comes to cooling systems IMO. Surface area is everything when it comes to heat transfer, so the more area the water has to cool itself on, the cooler it will be when it gets to the bottom.

It does mean adding a little more weight in the coolant though, but it's a fair trade off for a better cooling system. Just be careful of ebay-jobbies, as they have been known to leak under pressure. Koyo and ADRAD have a performance radiator available for the Evo 1-3 and 4-6, not sure which (if any) would fit the FTO though.
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

until then:
1. 2001 Merc-Benz A160 (porta-loo on wheels)
2. 2007 Peugeot 307 TDi (more fun than you'd expect)
3. 2009 Mitsubishi Triton Di-D (a monster in its own right)
4. 1992 Nissan NX Coupe (club car and project car)
5. 1996 Holden SB Barina - "The Nugget"
6. 1996 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport - The Budget Build
7. 2010 Toyota Landcruiser 76 Series - V8 Goodness... - Build coming soon.
8. 1990 Audi 90 manual - The delightfully dignified daily driver

Sweet, convenient timing.

Best scenario would be that I don't need a new one, but the cap and thermostat haven't solved my problem so we'll see.

It looks probably about half a cm thicker than standard, but all mounting points are the same. :)

I'm not sure on build quality of radiators, but this one looks pretty good for $230. Took it 2 days to get to mine.

Cool. Looks like the fans have a little room to move forward too.

Old thread I know but is this the one you got and is it good/any issues with it?
It's for Rowans car and his is an Auto.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/42mm-2-core- ... 2a24f71a37

Or as in the first post the one with the plastic tanks
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mitsubishi-F ... 25891e9ee1

Which would be best? I want to drop it straight in not have to modify anything to make it fit etc.
He's on about adding a turbo or supercharger later (prob turbo for him) so thinking thicker core would be better?
Cheers

This is something I need to do. I wasn't going to risk an eBay jobby though, was contemplating a PWR through VPW. It's a 42mm.

$715 is a touch rich though, going to see if I can get trade.

Actually looking again at most of these on ebay they say manual or don't specify, the 32mm ones with plastic caps and an alloy core say auto/manual - is that the one I need?

In regards to the PWR ones, I probably wouldn't get one. They tend to split as I've heard.

Considering they've been supplying the V8 Supercars for years, I'm willing to wager this'll be a mate told me about a mate on the internet style story he read on eggbeaters.com.

It's not a mate of a mate of a mate.. it's first hand photos of broken ones.

No different to how you've posted up pictures of your broken ultra racing bars.
