Camshafts/gears

Post by bjk »

Probably pipe dreaming here, but anyway.

I know RPW does camshafts for the 6A12, but it sounded like valandis had a lot of trouble. Does anyone else know of places that do the shafts, the also the gears? (I recall seeing another brand in that thread as well that I think Bennoz used?)

Cheaper to just drop a K20A and you can get aftermarket goodies everywhere which proven to work with significant gain.

Actually, just get a Honda.

Key terms: pipe dreaming.

I dunno, even at the moment I feel the 6A12 is powerful enough for me. But I'd like to do something different if I can. I'd like to stay NA, even though it's more expensive in some ways.

Haha way more expensive. Only way to make real gains cheap is forced induction. Unless you port polish hi flow heads ecu and all the rest which will cost more and less gain. Unfortunately for lack of bolt on bits na power just expensive to do

Unless you engine swap to a more powerful NA engine. All the more to think about.

on that note, how hard woud it be to drop a K20 in an FTO?

you would be spending money to put in an engine with not much more power.
To spend more money again for bolt on parts for said end.

Here's a more suited forum for you.

clicky

Will work out cheaper in the long run.

there were some people a few years back attempting to fit a Lexus V8, but it never went anywhere.

Hmm, that's kinda disappointing. I reckon given my level of mechanical competence I'll have to win the lottery and find someplace competent enough that I can say, 'This is what I want, make it so!'

Problem is there's 4 of them you need. Most billets are around $250 a pop, so there's a grand gone already & all you have is 4 steel sticks.

Then you gotta find someone to come up with the grind, there just isn't anyone who does them, so you'd be up for R&D costs, tooling setup etc.

Then you gotta hope they work & can be tuned in with whatever ECU you'll need to buy so you can adjust things like ignition timing & fuel.

That 5 grand could have been more easily spend strapping on a hair dryer. This is why no one bothers & its an un-explored avenue.
It's just too damn expensive for too little result. You'll never get the kind of power you will with boost.
We'll just have to add you to the NA purist pipe dreamer club with Valandis & Spetz

Perhaps it's also just born out of my oft-quoted mechanical noobishness. For some reason I feel there's more sh*t that can go wrong with a turbo. That being said, even now if something was amiss I probably wouldn't know what to do.

Maybe I'll aim for the 140 odd kw that the 6A12 seems capable of in NA via intake/exhuast/ecu, then save the dreaming craziness for something else. Likely a sleeper BJ protege with a turbo KL. :cheeky:
