Tyre width grip difference

Post by bjk »

How much difference is noticeable for every 10mm in width increase in tyre width? Is it enough to warrant the extra $$ ?

E.g. through Tempe, the KU36 is $149 ea for the 215/45R17, or $180 ea for the 235/45R17. Given that it's only a $124 difference for four tyres, is it worth going wider anyway?

Yes and No, in a straight line you wont notice anything because the FTO is underpowered but around corners (and women) the more rubber the better.

It depends on what you want to do. Street = No (if you follow the rules that is), track and a bit of fun on your PRIVATE road = Yes

Hmm. My thinking is that in the grand scheme of things is that $124 is not really that much. Money is money though.

It's not about width, it's about how many tyres of that size they sell. More common sizes are cheaper.

KU36 in an 235/40/18 are $169 a pop.

f**k me! You serious. Just go get some wheels already!

Get the 235s!

215's are too small.

For what... show?

215 are slightly larger than factory, and quite capable providing you don't cheap on the tyre itself.

Yeah, that's part of the reason I was tempted to 18s. Doubt I'd get similar savings like that at my local T-marts though.

Give me the money you're going to spend on coilovers, and I'll get some right away. 'sides, Shane was only running 215s on the racecar (yes I know he had slicks and that's quite a substantial difference).

' replaced 1 letter that you had to type.

As said, 1 letter!

Meanwhile.

I'm running 215 on the front and 235 on the rear.
1 for looks (yes, silver, looks.) 2 is for load rating.

You can't let anyone be different, can you? Intolerant old geezer.

Anyway, as you can tell, I change my mind every five seconds or less. I tend to think ahead of myself, so I make inquiries while I decide things. And then often decide to do completely different things.
