My guess is that it's a very very very early '97 GR, before it was changed to GX and the climate control has been replaced at some stage with the wrong one.

Or, there was some sort of option when new to have manual climate control from a version R for weight reduction and this car has it.

The seats are also a pattern I have never seen before. It must be some weirdly optioned car.

 Yes it is. GPvR manual control and GS had them also. They aren't easily interchangeable with the digital ones so I'm guessing it was like that from factory. There were also a couple different seat fabric patterns.

Yes, but I haven't seen any like that on an FTO.

Probably an option that not many people opted for. For obvious reasons.

Option fabric seats.
Pre facelift had the option of an Airbag steering wheel, 2 variants, that's the 3 spoke design one.
Front bar doesn't look like it matches the paint or body line, so replaced, despite the poor shots, doesn't look like parkers in the high beams...
Manual aircon controls have me however.
Stereo simply been replaced with something laying around.

GR with option fabric and steering wheel, facelift bumper and somehow manual aircon controls.

Weird. But it had a pre-facelift bar so can't have been made after March '97.

Edit: Dan are you sure? This one is a 4 speed tip which means it is in fact a GR and pre-facelift, with a facelift bar.

Dwayne would know for sure, but my searching showed only 4spds up to 96.

Meanwhile, another GR with manual controls.

EDIT: Looking at dstocks list.
GR Limited....
Not a lot of detail on that model, perhaps they had manual controls.

Technik, email the seller on Trademe and get his DE3A.

EDIT 2: Well, that thought it out the window, link below is a GR Ltd and has auto controls. (check completefto vin dec.)

Just to make it more confusing:

Model Code: HNHME
Model: GR
Engine: 6A12
Transmission: 5sp MT
Colour: Scotia White
Manufacture Date: Week 3, May 1997
Option Code: 000
Interior Code: 21X

It is indeed a GR, made if may 97. first registered June 97...

MT...

GR
The ultra-rare facelift GR model continued with it's 170bhp engine and lost its standard climate control, this model was only available without the "Sports Package".
