Almost had an accident....

Post by Greentea »

Alright. So I'm driving in the wet. Everything was normal. I was driving slow and carefully. Came up to a round about. I was doing 20km/h as I was appraoching it. Looked both ways and it was clear. Then as soon as I got onto the round about my front left tire slipped.

My steering wheel and my brakes locked up. Pulled my handbrake just before hitting the curb and stopped my car. (I actually hit the curb. I have a 1cm scratch on the nose of my car now -.-)

Don't know what the hell went wrong. My tires were changed when I bought the car. I checked the tire pressure. (32 at the front and 30 at the back), I wasn't braking or accelerating at all and I was still travelling in a straight line.

I took my car to the industrial area after to test my brakes. Sped up to 50km/h and slammed my brakes. My car came to a quick stop. Had complete control of the car. No locking brakes or steering wheel.

Anyone know what may have happened. I really wanna know. I don't believe I made any mistakes or did anything wrong so I don't know why I suddenly lost complete control of my car.

Oil or something slippery on road. Sometimes that just happens. Ive had the front wheel start to slip at 20km on a number of cars in Canberra (although not in my FTO - Triton is the worst). As a result, am usually quite careful when cornering in the city in the wet. All it takes is a bit of oil or something and you are off in the grass (or someones front garden).

I was coming the road on the left and I was turning right. It was a bit of a downhill, but i don't think it was anything too steep.

So you guys think it was oil? Damn. Well, there is no way of avoiding the oil if you are going to use that round about. Lol

Still was some pretty scary shii. Front bumper scratched a little :/

Is particularly bad when it hasnt rained in a while. small amounts of oil build up and come to the surface when it rains. The camber on that corner wouldnt help. Also, what brand tyres are you running on the front? I bet you have cheap tyres that arent directional.

I actually have no clue which tires I have O_O Woops...

That turn would be so damn dangerous then. Single lane on the roundabout. Would be very hard to avoid the oil if it was there. I was doing 20km/h and I still slipped on it. Feel sorry for anyone who does that turn faster than I did.

If your tyres are made from a hard rubber compound, they will last longer, but wont grip as well. Cheap tyres wont grip as well either. Directional tyres only fit on the car one way, but the benefit is that the entire tread pushes water out in the wet. On non directional tyres, only half the tread pushes water out (the other half of the tread pushes water into the centre of the tread). This results in much less grip in the wet.

Alright. I'll look into getting some new directional tires for my car because I was already planning on getting new rims. I'll probably do it after the school holidays when I have money. Parents are guying to China anyway so I won't be driving for a while.

        Thanks man :)

        Any suggestion for rims?

I want what this guy has but I don't know what brand they are :/

My FTO is decked out in true drug dealer style - Legit, I bought it from drug dealers. This includes the chromies and a huge droney cannon on the back. Is it making sense now? :hoover:
