I broke something.... :| Is that the inner cv? Well, with the boot gone, the entire rod now just pops out of there..
How do I fix it?

Image

Also, need to fix this leaky book...no idea what that is either....it's at the other end of tie rod end.

+1 to toberinjurybrokeitgearboxoil

Just replace all your boots. And yes the ones inside the tie rod = steering rack boots. Generic ones from supercheap auto.

As for shaft popping in and out (lol) I dunno. Only know boots cause I changed all mine :D

I had outer CV boot coming from ebay, so might order the inner boot as well I guess.

Just worried if the shaft be attached to something? or is it a free flowing one..... :\

Also all the leak around the inner cv boot near the gear box...looks like it was on its way out...today's work just nailed the final blow?

Should I be able to do the work by myself? (No special tools/machining required?)

The shaft is supposed to be attached inside that green (well, grease colored for you) cup.

And yes you should be able to do it yourself. Just see here - http://ftoaustralia.com/v3/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=27946

Then you just need to get the shafts out, follow that guide, then get them back in.

As for tie rod ends, just undo the little castle nut underneath and you can slide the boot out and off then replace. I suggest you replace your tie rods as well. And you will need a wheel alignment after doing this. It's pretty straight forward when you actually look at it.

And please degrease everything while you're there

Yeh the boot is the only thing that holds the inner cv in place.
Steering rack boot is easy to get, inner cv boot is abit harder. Try repco, they are the same as a HJ galant

%100
there's a clip that holds the cv onto the shaft, then it just slots into the cup and is held in by the boot.

This ^

Just wash it out and get all the old grease out. It's likely to be a bit crusty or crappy seeing as the boot is fucked. Phil told me to use a hose and some soap and brake cleaner. Worked very well on mine. Just use a fuckload of brake cleaner to loosen up all the grease, spray it with the hose, then use soap to get all the crap out, give it another blast of water then blast it with the brake cleaner again. Let it dry before you replace the boot then pack it full of new grease and install.

I just went to Repco and asked for grease for my driveshafts, gave me some Castrol stuff in a white tube.

I have tie rod ends coming my way. Well I was supposed to change all bushes for the front control arm...so was planning to get that out to take it to a mechanic and have the bushes pressed in.....only thing I couldn't figure out a way to get to is the front sway bar bushes :|

Outer tie rod ends:

Inner CV boot kit:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MITSUBISHI-F ... 398&_uhb=1

(would these fit? What's that cone for? :\)

Outer CV kits:

Using the existing ABS ring on the new ones.

And need to order front and rear droplinks as well.

Actually they say they're universal 8O the ones you need are a particular shape to fit over the cups.

Just undo everything including the clip on the boot and it should just pop out.

No you have pry them out of the gearbox with a pry bar or big flathead screwdriver and hammer

U only need to take em out if you're doing the seals? You'll lose a heap of box oil when you do remove em

So I don't need to take the whole axle out to do the inner cv boot? The pics and all videos show the whole axle out?
