DIY TABLET AND HEADUNIT RELOCATION (OPTIONAL)

Post by adzski »

Hey Guys,

so this is a DIY guide for a tablet install and head unit relocation which is optional.
this guide is including the head unit relocation.

What you will need

. a Tablet, i and 2 other users here (Vectose,Technikhaus) used a 7" samsung galaxy tab 2, other ones will work just make sure they fit!
.Harness extension
Image

. Soldering iron + solder + electrical tape + heatshrink

. Double Sided Tape

. 12 to 5v converter
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-SOCKET-3 ... 2335f7ec84

. antenna extender
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8-8FT-AM-FM- ... 1c3c6df96e

. Long RCA Left and right Audio cable and female to female connector (might not need if you dont have subs)
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-5M-2x-RCA- ... 1e8622c643

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Female-to-Fe ... 43b544cc3d

. Long Aux Cable
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Aux-Cable-St ... 5d3bba4167

Instructions

. the first thing you need to do is remove your stereo surround, be careful not to brake it.

. once the stereo surround is out of the way, you then need to unplug the harness from the head unit, the antenna and the L and R RCA cables if you have them.

. unplug the headunit harness that is connecting to the factory radio plug, now take your harness to a auto electrician and get it extended.
Image

.with your recently extended harness, plug it back into the factory plug, and feed it through to the glove box.

.connect the antenna extender to your antenna, and feed it through to the glove box, this is optional but tape up the connection between your antenna and the extension.

. plug your L and R RCA cables into the female to female joiner and plug in the new cables, tape up the connection with the joiner and feed the cables into the glove box.

.now put your head unit in the glove box, plug in the harness, antenna, Rca cables.

Tablet Power Supply

if your not handy with a soldering iron, any auto elec will do it for you shouldn't cost much, but its easy so give it a crack.

. on your cigarette lighter, find the power and the ground wires, power should be red (or another colour) and ground will be black, there easy to find. just locate your ciggie light bulb and trace it back to where you have enough room to splice.

. now i didnt cut the power and ground cause i was lazy, i just removed the insulation on both so you could see the exposed copper wire.

. grab your 12V to 5V converter and splice, you can twirl or loop the wire around the wires just make sure it makes a good connection. for newbies the power to power and ground to ground or a screw. do not solder yet!!

. plug your usb cable into your tablet, then plug the end of your usb cable into the female usb connector. turn on your car so you have power to your cigarette lighter, now your tablet should be charging and have power. if it doesnt have power and is not charging you may have your power and ground not connected properly.

. now solder up the power and ground connection, either heat shrink it use electrical tape for protection over the connection. plug in your usb cable and tape up where it connects to the female connector.

. test fit the tablet in the double din area of your stereo surround, find the best placing so it looks even, now get some double sided tape and put it on the sides of the table screen and push it up against the stereo surround, if done correctly you shouldn't be able to see the tape.

. plug the aux cable into the tablet, make sure its also connected to the head unit.

.carefully refit the the stereo surround and wallah your done.

Finished product

will get pics of the tablet and how it sits on the stereo surround tomorrow!

You should probably get a converter that pushes out enough amps too.

I should also mention my head unit has bluetooth and I have it set up to auto connect to my phone. I also use an app called tablet talk which allows me to make/receive calls from the tablet but the audio still goes through the phone.

So when I get a call the head unit switches to BT and I can answer it from the tab.

This is my setup, I no longer use this interface though.

I just have a Cigarette lighter socket behind it, with a car adaptor plugged in for the power for it.
Then I just have a 3.5mm cable from the tablet to the head unit behind it.

i guess that saves having to splice into the wires.
Also when you plug your phone into the headunit does that charge it aswell?

I thought something like this was potentially useful.

Have been doing a bit of thinking re a tablet that can be docked/undocked.

The way mine fits, it doesn't need double sided tape to hold in, but I did have to cut up some of the plastics behind the bezel.
That dock would be pretty cool dstocks, though you would have to cut it right up to be able to fit it in there.

Some, but not really much more than youve will have had to cut already. Essentially thought, that's why I havent done it .... yet. Ive got a 2nd hand console and surround to play with but dont have a master plan just yet.

No double sided tape on mine either.

I personally don't like the idea of a removable tavlet as it would mean having a slot cut in the console.

I bought this tablet for the sole purpose of using it in the car.

My biggest question about this still, how is the audio quality on this since it has to be run through AUX? and can you be fined for touching this e.g changing music or whatever driving along?

Ive been debating the audio quality as well and kept being ignored about it. I guess there is no audiophiles on the forums

Yeah, but it's a big difference between quality with aux and ipod connection. Unless it's my head unit/cable.

If you have any alternator whine or engine noise it is because tou have a ground loop. I don't have any noise and the quality is great.
